not finishing his food

for the past week, diesel has not been finishing all of his food. he has always gobbled his food up. he's 8 1/2 months right now and he gets roughly 6 cups a day of canidae. is he telling me he is full? i can't believe he would actually not eat all of his food. he's usually a nut when it comes to food time!

i have tried giving him a little less food, but still, the last little bit (sometimes more) he doesnt eat.

he's acting fine, no problems with going to the bathroom or anything.

thanks.

Re: not finishing his food

Most young dogs self-restrict to some degree when they are between growth spurts.

As long as he's fine in all other respects, I wouldn't worry about him leaving a little in his bowl at his age. Just keep an eye on him, he should be fine.

Re: not finishing his food

I have the same problem with Harley. Sometimes he will leave around 10 - 15 piece of kibble in the bowl, other times he licks the bowl clean!

Hi Tara, I wouldn't worry if he doesn't finish bc I can remember when Czar would eat like a pig then not as much another time, but isn't 6 cups of Canidae alot ? I didn't think you fed that much with a good quality food. Do you feed it all at once or twice a day?

Wow I can't believe he is 8 months already, where did the time go? I can remember when he was this itty bitty puppy, lol . Gee it sure would be nice to see this handsome boy again .

Re: not finishing his food

For the past few days i've been giving him 2 1/2 cups twice a day. We put yogurt in his food at night and he gobbles that right up! It's just his breakfast that he's being picky about. So, I leave his food down for 15 - 20 min, and whatever he doesn't eat, goes away.

I talked to our breeder and she said Diesel's sire was the same way around this age.

Judy--I can't believe all this time has past and I havent posted any pictures of him recently! I have a bunch saved on my computer, I'll find a few to post in chit chat. I do have a lot of pictures on Ofoto, if you PM me with your email, I can send you the link. I also have some pics of him and his "daddy" last time we went home. He's definitly maturing some, finally lifting his leg, (ugh). Poor Roxy can't pee in peace! If I don't grab him, he's over top of her with his leg up.

Oh, we had been feeding him around 4 cups for awhile, but we needed to try to get some weight on him. He was looking very thin. He's still a little on the thin side, but that's the way I like it! No fat dogs for me!
