Tendonitis?

Guerin has gimped on and off, since we got back from WA, so Phil (who does not ask a ton of questions) took him to the vet today, and she said he MIGHT have tendonitis in the right front. The gimpiness, has moved though from front to back and side to side. And she said she MAY have felt a little something in the right front that leads her to belive it is tendonitis. So he is supposed to rest and have an ascriptin, twice a day for a week. So he just went through a major growth spurt, is this growing pains? He has done nothing that we have seen that could have caused an injury. Thoughts anyone? And what is the outcome of tendonitis?

Re: Tendonitis?

Also, he spent A LOT of time in the crate this weekend at the show and in the car in his crate for a 8+ hour drive to and from, I was thinking he really was more just stiff and sore.

Re: Tendonitis?

Moving from leg to leg is one of the characteristics of Pano

Re: Tendonitis?

That's not unusual for it to effect one area or leg. Also you may see his left rear leg overdriving as a result of him trying to get weight off the front right. Hope he gets better soon.

Poor baby!!!!!

Sounds like pano to me too, but this is not my area of expertise.

Hope he feels better soon!

Re: Tendonitis?

Shirley,

Luna's vet thinks she has developed tendonitis in one of her elbows. It is different than what you're describing, unless Guerin's is a very mild case. If Luna bolts after a squirrel in the yard and torques her elbow wrong, she will develop a pronounced soft swelling and heat in the joint, accompanied by pain severe enough that she's hopping instead of walking. The lameness does not travel at all, it's only in the one leg.

It really worried me at first, until I discovered how quickly it recedes with rest, a cold gel pack that conforms to her leg, and a topical homeopathic, Zeel. She tweaked it about once a week for 3 weeks but recovered within a day or two after the cold packs and confinement. It hasn't happened again during the last month, knock on wood, so hopefully we're over that bump.

Re: Tendonitis?

Pano is a juvenile disease of the long bone and is usually self-limiting but lasts different lengths of time. It can move from leg to let, but it doesn't "jump" from leg to leg.

Soft tissue injuries usually take up to 3 months for complete healing. Your girl is not healing quickly, she is reinjuring it repeatedly without complete healing. You should restrict her until it is completely healed or you end up with a cronic condition for life. Take her out on lead and keep her restricted in the house as well. She doesn't need to be crated but should be put in a room where she cannot bolt for the door when someone knocks or tear to the windows, etc.

Re: Tendonitis?

Thanks, Judi, I'll do that. Those pesky little squirrels are so active during springtime....always trying to sucker Luna into a game of chase. Most of her exercise is through leash walking anyway and I don't push it if she's been sore, but I still take her out for a short one once the limping subsides and build up from there. So far that seems to be working.

Re: Tendonitis?

I had a girl with a soft tissue injury she got during a herding trial with some very wild sheep and working on crushed granite in a large arena. Not a good combo. After futzing around (just like you) wondering why it kept coming back, I saw a specialist and that was his advice. No walks at all. Outside to potty on leash and back in. Lived in my bedroom at the back of the house. 3 months. This was after it kept coming back for a year. That was 5 years ago and she went on to her UD, and has never been lame since - she is now 11. I followed his directions religeously. I'm trying to save you the thousand dollars I spent on diagnosis. You don't go out and see if she is going to start limping again, you just wait and let it heal.

Re: Tendonitis?

Yikes...no walks at all, not even down the block and back? I'll have to look up that link for games to play during recovery to ward off a serious case of the zoomies! I have taught her "slow down" in the yard, which she understands, but I guess it's time to pull up a chair and teach "watch it", too!

I do know that the serious rest does work for soft tissue injuries. I had a horse that tore a ligament in his hoof and he was on stall rest for a full year, zowie, but he also made a full recovery and never had a problem thereafter. I felt terrible cooping him up like that, but I really trusted the vet, that's what he said to do, and he was right.

Thanks so much. Luna will thank you later!

Re: Tendonitis?

Tell her it is my fault and that way she can be made at me instead of you. Caution. I first put up a baby gate (one of the tall 36 inch ones, and the first time the doorbell rang she flew over it so I learned I had to close the door. It was not a bad life. She laid on my bed and watched TV.

Re: Tendonitis?

Maybe I can teach her how to howl "Juuudiiiiiiiiiii double woo woo woo"

I have doors I can close to prevent a race for the door. They're always closed when I'm gone, so she's conditioned that when those doors are shut, it's quiet time.

Re: Tendonitis?

Wow Patti, I hope it is pano for us and not tendonitis! Thanks all for the well wishes. We will keep him quiet and on aspirin for a week and see how it goes.

Me, too! Sorry to railroad your thread. We did learn a bit more about tendonitis, though, didn't we? I hope Mr. Guerin just has a touch of pano and comes out of it in tip top shape! Now I see zoomyitis peeking over the horizon for Luna....I bet Guerin will get it, too. Ah, but don't you know it's hard to keep a good dog down....
