Re: Leah's TPLO leg is hurting so bad

Anne ,he gave no reason except to say in case Something is amiss ,we would see,if not well?????said it is a very simple procedure...We had someone else on here who was having theirs removed due to allergic reaction, and one more ,but don't know why, I said if I had to get Leahs removed I would make an earring or something,2000.00 earring!!!! the other person said she was thinking about a pendant...but I can't find those posts, will have to take my time and go thru all pages, unless you are reading and want to save me the problem of searching(Please) she has had bloodwork and is OK..... I have to call him in 2 weeks, but Leah has an app't to get the tumor from her chest on the 17 of may...so that will be first....She seems a little relieved from severe pain to moderate now,she will start a reduced dose from 2Xdaily to 1X today, then every other day till gone,so Still praying this does the trick.. thanks again for careing it means so much......

Re: Leah's TPLO leg is hurting so bad

Glad things seem to be improving a little for Leah.

I just might have Sophie xrayed again as well. I really am not happy with the second surgery. She also had a reaction to the suture material which seems to have settled after all this time. However she still limps occasionally and this is 8 months post surgery. Her knee still turns out too. She has the bow legged appearance.

Leahjean I will do a search to find the posts you mentioned. No need for you to do it for me.
All the very best with Leah and please keep us posted on her progress.

Re: Leah's TPLO leg is hurting so bad

Sorry all, been out of town for a couple days and am now catching up. TPLO hardware isn't just routinely removed. However, the osteotomy that changes the angle of the tibia is what helps stabilize the knee. The hardware is used to hold the 2 ends of the tibia together. Once that surgically induced fracture has healed, there really is no further need for the hardware. Hunting/field dogs that live in very cold climates sometimes do have them taken out on a preventive basis. Very cold weather can lead to microscopic contraction/expansion of the metal, which can cause pain. Charleigh was licking one of her knees a few months ago. Her ortho thought she might be having a reaction to the bone plate, but things cleared up using conservative treatment. When dogs are having unexplained pain this far post TPLO, one of the things that can be tried is removing the plate. I agree with BostonRott, I'd want some bloodwork done to rule out other causes of lameness, as well as X-rays of spine and hips to rule out problems there. That is, if this course of treatment doesn't take care of the problem. Fingers crossed it does! Keep us posted.

Re: Leah's TPLO leg is hurting so bad

Thanks for replying Beth. It's always reassuring to hear from you in regard to this TPLO business.

I hope Leah is getting better Leahjean.

Sophie certainly has stopped limping, it was only for a couple of days and I guess she overdid something when I let her run in the off leash park. There were no other dogs there and she ran like the wind until I called her back. Perhaps running like that has to be taken off her agenda. I fear we are stuck with the bow legged look though.

In any case I gave her a couple of days of quiet rest and all is well today. I will still take her back for a check up though, just to be sure.
