Re: Vet Visits begin...

Ya know.. Until you own one, and have it sick, you dont understand the bond that is built between and boy and his dog.. I used to wonder why people got upset when "a dog" died... Yet, I was up all night just petting on him, worried to death that there was something seriously wrong, and he wouldnt make it.. Now I realize that my dog more than just a dog.. He is my best friend...

Re: Vet Visits begin...

Whew! I am so glad Duke is OK! You too...I know it must have been terrible for you worrying.

I love my vet but he doesn't do 24 hour emergency. Luckily we have a 24 hour emergency clinic about 20 minutes north of the city. You are very lucky to have someone you can page!

Get well soon Duke!

Re: Vet Visits begin...

I'm really glad you got him in and that it's something so easily treated.

One of my favorite quotes is the one that goes something like this: "A boy needs only two things...a dog and a mother who will let him have one."

Re: Vet Visits begin...

We give our pills "studded in a hot dog" (sliced to size) and the liquid either gets put directly in their mouth, or on something that will absorb it, and will be eaten in its entirity (something yummy....mine love regular white bread, so that works for us!) Good luck Wot_Racing...I'm glad to hear your dog is on his way to good health again!

Re: Vet Visits begin...

Pills: smear with peanut butter, cream cheese, or canned dog food. Show it to dog. When he opens his mouth in delight, stick your finger in his mouth and smear PB covered pill onto the back of his tongue. If he's really fussy, you might want to trick him by doing this without the pill first.

Liquid: I use an oral syringe and squirt it down the back of the throat.

Bwaahaaha!

Re: Vet Visits begin...

I had Jasmine on panacur when we were working on figuring out what her stomach problems were. The vet told me to make sure and let it sit in her food for at least 20 minutes. I'd mix it in her food w/ some water and let it soak until it was lapable. I don't know why, but they said I had to absolutely make sure the panacur was mixed with food and soaked in.

Re: Vet Visits begin...

It also works well to make the dog work for the pill. Wrap in cheese or raw hamburger and give a command, then reward, LOL. They think if it's a reward, it must be good! Or, just wrap it as above and lob it to them...it's down the hatch before they've even tasted it.

For small amounts of liquid, I use a plastic syringe (no needle!) and squirt it in the lip pocket. Larger amounts get squirted into the back of the mouth with chin slightly elevated so it can't be spit out the sides.

Maybe you'll get lucky and he'll just take the pills like a treat. This is what Brodie does, only dog I've ever known to take pills so easily. As for the liquid I'd go along with putting it on something that will absorb it. Maybe you can stop by McDonalds and get a plain hamburger(make sure to ask for a plain one, just the meat and the bread) and let the bun absorb the liquid then give Duke the whole burger. I'm sure he won't turn that down

Re: Vet Visits begin...

Pills I gave rolled in a piece of American chesse. First give a portion of the cheese so the dog thinks its yummy. Then peel a strip off and roll the pill in it and give it to Duke. Worked for Hercules, but he didn't like peanut butter so I had to find an alternative. Easy cheese worked good too!

Liquid I'm not sure. But when I give Hercules his oil (a liquid) I mix it in with his yogurt. Another option might be buying some canned pumpkin and mixing it in with that? Pumpkin has a lot of fiber too, so that could help with his stools.

When Hercules was taking the Panacur for his parasite, I mixed that in with canned dog food. Though my vet never said anything about letting it stand for 20 minutes before giving it to him.

I'm so glad to hear Duke is okay and you found out what was wrong with him! Good luck with his treatments!
