The Fun Of Giving puppy a pill....

Well, we had to give Squeak her second dose of Intercepter this morning....she FAKED swallowing it!!!! We had thought she swallowed it, she got up from a sitting position and spit the thing halfway across the room!!! I finally coaxed her into taking it by pretending that i was eating it! What a time im telling yah she did this a few times before she finally swallowed it :)

Have you tried just mixing it in with her food? That's what I used to do when Rocco was little and he never noticed it.

Stick it in a piece of cheese or something that they like! They'll never know what happened.

Yep just when you think they got it down, it comes back up when you're not looking :D ,lol. I agree with casual observer and Patty put it in a piece of string cheese or a tiny piece of hotdog. You can put it in just about anything. I guess I'm lucky, I just pop it in Czar's mouth and down it goes :D. I've done that from day one. He's so use to getting pills that he comes over to me, sits down and practically opens his mouth. So yes if you have problems getting them down then by all means put it in food and you can make alittle game out of it.

I thought it was pretty funny for this time, but when the time comes that we have to give her another pill yes we will try to add it to food or with a nice cheese treat :D :D It was just so cute the way it happened, kinda wish i had my video camera running 24 hours to pick up those little quirks yah know? but i am sure people would get sick of watching them LOL!

The hand that holds the mouth open also contains a buscuit. They're so focused on how to get that biscuit into their mouth, that you can push the pill way back on their tongue, then hold their mouth closed while stroking the throat until they swallow. Immediately give the pup the biscuit. Swallowing the biscuit insures that the pill stays swallowed.

Never ever even thought of that which is dumb of me because i use her biscuits in that way when training for focus. Thanks guys :) It just made me laugh thought it was pretty funny so posted it. I mean that pill grew wings and flew LOL.

Re: The Fun Of Giving puppy a pill....

I am so glad that Brodie thinks anything coming from your hand is a treat :p :D. It is so easy that way when it is pill time(which is every morning and evening). Now, my old girl Misha was another story!! When she was younger the pill in the hotdog or rolled up in cheese worked like a charm. As she got into her elderly years(10-13) she started getting a little more wiley about the pills. Cheese no longer worked and neither did the hotdog . Tried crushing it and mixing it in with her canned food, didn't work. She could smell the medicine and would not touch the food. Peanut Butter worked for awhile, but then that too lost it's usefulness. So we just had to resort to prying open the mouth and getting the pill as far back on her tongue as possible. If only all pills looked and tasted like M&M's(we never would've had any problems then!!)

Try wrapping some liverwurst around the pill. I have yet to see a dog that resists this. This makes it fun, and not an unnecessary power struggle.

Re: The Fun Of Giving puppy a pill....

Luckily my Rotti boy took pills easily, my Westie girls are another matter, I give them to them and then have to watch carefully to see they don't spit them out the side of their mouth when I've moved away. Lately they have been great and have had no problems at all.

I use peanut butter with my boy. I cover the pills in a peanut butter chunk, and then give him a tablespoon of peanut butter to wash it down with. I also used Cream Cheese with my Girl. I would often give her balls of cream cheese for treats, so she did not know which ones contained her pills etc.

I feel your pain....

We just finished up Julius' round of Doxycycline for his Lyme Disease. It was five pills EVVVERRRY day. For awhile there Julius was cool with me stuffing them in the hot dog & he would just swallow it whole.

Then...he realized that there WERE pills in the hot dog & so he started to eat around the hot dog & spit out the pills. It's made the last couple of weeks VERRRRY fun!

:)

Re: The Fun Of Giving puppy a pill....

Max takes pills like a champ. He used to spit them out but I think he has realized that they are an inevitable part of his life. I discovered that if I saved his FAVORITE treat for only after pills, he could care less about the pills. I used to give him a treat after every pill so that he would learn. Now if I shake a pill bottle, he comes running and sits down right in front of me. I don't even have to pry his mouth open. He already has it open a little with the poochie smile dogs have and then I hold it open and put the pill in. Massage a little and give him his treat. I don't give him a treat every time anymore (he takes too many pills - he'd get fat! :D), but he knows that chances are good that he'll get his favorite-est treat ever.

Re: The Fun Of Giving puppy a pill....

Sajan and I came to a compromise long ago that if he swallowed the pill he'd get a tasty treat :D I tried putting them in things and he always found them. WIth our compromise, when he hears me rattle a bottle he comes running over and sits by me and open his mouth a little. I put the pill in the back of his throat and quickly follow with a treat. He sometimes tries to fool me and doesn't swallow it but waits for his treat before he spits it out. I have learned to tell the difference ;)

That is soooooooo funny! this is only Squeak's second time getting a pill. One she got at the vet's office and gave them a bit of a battle also! hehe she's just so cute can't help but laugh when she does her little antics. She's a stubborn one, definately has a devilish gleam in her pretty little eyes :)
