Excessive Drinking/Urinating

I have a nine week old male who tends to drink water excessively and urinate excessively. I have taken him to the vet and all the lab results came back normal. The doctor says it is Psychogenic. Does anyone have this experience? What can be done?

The vet thinks it's stress related? How long have you had him? How much is he drinking and how often does he urinate?

What are you feeding him? Is it possible that he's drinking a lot because he's eating something high in sodium? What do you consider excessive?

Re: Excessive Drinking/Urinating

George actually is still at home with his mom, dad and littermates. We had a litter of 8 and he is one of the 4 left. When he was about 4 weeks of age when we noticed he wasn’t nursing as much as his littermates. We were already were all the other dogs. We gave him some pedilite and he drank the whole bowl. He then immediately urinates. We continued to do this with him for about a week and a half. At 8 weeks of age he went to a new home. The new home said he drinks water nonstop and urinates nonstop. After two nights they brought him back. We took him straight to the vet and had the lab test ran. Whenever thing came back normal we took him home back to his family. We have taken notice that he really does drink a lot of water and does immediately urinate. Any time we are in his pin he is drinking and immediately urinates. None of the other puppies exhibit this behavior. We have decided to keep him until he either out grows it or is old enough to find him a strictly outdoors home. What do you think about this?

We have been feeding him Beef-n-More. Up until they were 7 weeks of age they were eating Hills Prescription Diet P/D softened with milk and baby cereal. At 7 weeks they stared on canned food and Beef-n-More. At 9 weeks of age we are weaning them off the canned food.

Re: Excessive Drinking/Urinating

Harley did this the first few months he was with us. He doesnt do it anymore......I had him checked out by the vet and she told me it was normally for a puppy who was playing a lot to drink a lot of water. I started putting some ice cubes in a bowl while he was playing and that seemed to stop the excessive water drinking. Now that he is 5 months old he doesnt drink a LOT of water anymore. He drinks normal amounts.

Re: Excessive Drinking/Urinating

I will definitely try the ice cube trick. Is or was your dog indoors? What should I do about the urination? Our inside kennel is 10x5 and he is able to urinate when he wants and can stay out of it. I am just happy that someone else has gone through this and it is not some rare heredity metabolism disorder like one vet tried to say!
