Cryptosporidium, "Beaver Fever", Giardia Lambia

Can this be passed from dog to dog?

Yes, if the dog is exposed to the infected dogs stool, they can pass it on.

Re: Cryptosporidium, "Beaver Fever", Giardia Lambia

Let me tell you, this is one nasty little bacteria. My Rott contracted it last year. It took about 1 1/2-2 months to finally get rid of it and "firm things up". His gastro system really took a beating. I can tell you that there is only ONE drug out there specifically made for crypto. Hard to get and a little pricey. I can't remember what it is called, but a google search should do the trick. Unfortunate thing is most vets don't know how to diagnose this thing and treat it like any other parasite/bacteria. I lost some serious treatment time farting around with meds that didn't work before we finally found the problem.

Yeah, it can be really nasty and very difficult to get rid of. I've always known Flagyl to be the treatment of choice.

Ok thanks for the info. Was wandering because my dog was exposed to a dog that has it.

When you say exposed to, do you mean they shared an area where the infected dog had gone to the toilet? The most common way to pass this on is through the stool infecting the dirt and another dog comes along, sniffs the infected dirt and licks his/her nose and gets infected.

Re: Cryptosporidium, "Beaver Fever", Giardia Lambia

My girlfriends sister brought her rotti down for the easter weekend. We took the dogs to the country for an off leash walk and her dog left an unhealthy looking stool. My girl was trying to sniff it but we kept her away from it.
