Yearly Vaccination My vet statements here about the vaccination really made me confused. Is it really needed to give complete yearly vaccination (Parvo, distemper, lepsto, hepatitis and rabies) to an adult dog? Is there any certain limit for the age of vaccination required? Thanks :)

Re: Yearly Vaccination There have been some changes to recommendations = It is considered that a three year schedule can be adequate - depending upon the risk of exposure! Most/many vets still recommend annuals for a couple of reasons. One being that "risk of exposure" - unknown so they are being conservative, and the other is that without the annuals, many owners would skip an annual visit as well, which the vet community feels is important for on-going health exams. It should be noted that we are on about a 7th or 9th generation of vaccines. Highly improved not only from effectiveness, but also side effects. Many of the old cautions regarding vaccines linger on in spite of the fact that they no longer apply. Unless you have an immune compromised dog, I tend to follow the conservative approach as well but my dogs are out and about, not just training classes, but showing where a judges hands might go from one mouth to the next. If you do have an immune compromised dog, I would hope you don't just protect it from vaccines, but from any exposure to disease. Where you are located, I would suspect there are a great many of unprotected and unvaccinated dogs that could expose your dog to high risk. I would follow your vet's recommendations as he knows the exposure risk more than those living in areas where vaccination is the norm.

Re: Yearly Vaccination Thank you Judi, Yes, you are right, vaccination is still a luxurious things for pets here :( . While trusting only the vets for my dogs health issues is not the best option for me since I had undergone bad experiences in the past with that. Thanks again for your reply, I think your suggestion is acceptable ;)

Re: Yearly Vaccination I absolutely agree Judi and want to add on that the reason I also take the conservative approach is that since we are out so much in so many different environments we always risk the chance that we may come in contact with an infected uninnoculated animal. Unfortunately there are many people out there that simply do not vaccinate their dogs or do titres. I do distemper/parvo etc yearly and rabies every three years after the first year.

| Re: Yearly Vaccination I just did the 3 year vacination. Went back to our old vet as Guess knows him and after the micro incident were worried. All went well till the vet tech (she was huge) she came in or tried to he swizzled and saw the vet getting the needles out and gave a warning growl, everyone froze. As soon as the vet tech backed off he was calm our vet had been warned of his bad experience and took it in stride and said we'll thats not like him at all what did they do to him and we discussed how to correct this. He actually took a half hour of calmly talking to Guess and reassuring him and we sedated him it took over an hour for the meds to kick in and he still was able to lift my husband and myself off the ground when they hit him with the needle but sank back down. The vet even spent time afterward petting and reassuring our boy. But I am highly relieved that they now have 3 year vacines.

Re: Yearly Vaccination I don't have problems in bringing the dogs to the vet's place. My vet and the assistants never find difficulties during examine and vaccinate my dogs. :) I am the one who still in trauma since I once lost my 2 puppies at the same time because I was trusting their vaccination and the treatment when they got sick to onother vet's suggestion. :(
