Re: Sick Pup

Good news. I cooked up some rice and hamburger for Razer last night and gave him a bit. He didn't get sick or have diarrhea at all in the evening or throughout the night. He had more rice and hamburger this morning and when he pooped, it was almost normal (just slightly soft). I think the worst of whatever he had is over. Thank goodness!

Re: Sick Pup

I definately disagree with not having water available. If there's vomiting then it's good to offer ice chips every so often then after a few hours of no vomiting then offer SMALL amounts of water but never fast where there's no water intake . Ice chips are great so as I said start out with that then gradually give small amounts water but you must monitor the intake when there's vomiting involved and LARGE amounts of water during this time is not good.

How is your boy today? Good thoughts coming your way and I hope he's better :) .

Re: Sick Pup

All I can say is that I have used this method with all my dogs, including puppies over the years and I can assure you all that they are all live and well and no one ever died of dehydration in a 24-hour period. :D I start the fast at the onset of the diahrrea and then the next day begin the Pedilyte and rice/boiled meat combo per UoP. Usually add in Limotil for adults and Albon for pups on day 2. If there is vomiting beyond once in a 24-hour period then they go to the vet the next day.

Of course it is absolutely recommended that newbies take their dogs to the vet asap, but I have enough expereince that I know when and when not a vet visit is warranted.

If you don't mind, in this one case, I think I'll take the advice of the number one veterinary hospital in the entire world...ya know, the one that TEACHES YOUR VETS and in may cases the VET SCHOOLS that are teaching your vets! ;) :) :D :p

I hope your boy is doing well! :)

Re: Sick Pup

When Missy was very ill and I thought I was going to lose her, the vet told me no food or water.

Re: Sick Pup

I guess it depends on who you talk to, but my Vet has said never to withhold water.

Well apparently ALL vets( in the entire world don't follow their advice! ;) I trust my vet completely, she nursed my boy back to good health and if she says give water, I am going to do just that! :p

Re: Sick Pup

The difference. If withholding is started immediately, holding the water will be fine. If the dog has been having diahrea and vomiting for a bit, then it is started dehydrating and withholding water can be a problem. See? Everyone is correct.

Subcue ringers can be a great thing to do.

Re: Sick Pup

My 11 week old puppy had bad runs it got so bad it was like projectile I took him to the vets they kept him in and 3 days later he was allowed out, he is better the sample they sent away revealed he had camplyobacter which basically is food poisoning, so if your puppy has the runs it is best to take a sample in for then to send away.
