Re: Austin is having Seizures

My vet says if they have no more than one seizure a month, that no medication is necessary.

Our lab Jake had seizures, starting at about age 2-3. We were able--eventually--to learn what the trigger was, and eliminate it. He had no seizures from 4-95 till he died 5-00, at almost 13 years.

Jake's trigger was being awakened suddenly, or going from a complete resting situation to high action. So for instance, when we got up in the morning, instead of heading straight outside we would go ahead and get dressed, etc. By the time we went outside, Jake had been wandering around our room, stretching, and getting the blood flowing.

Since his may be related to stress, would you consider something mild for stress, like rescue remedy?

Re: Austin is having Seizures

I would consider it I will have to do a search on it today. I'm also going to try and get a wire crate instead of the vari-kennel but I search yesterday and they're 100 bucks I may have to wait a couple of weeks. Thanks for that insight mmgy I didn't realise that with some tweaking of his environment we might be able to stop them.

Re: Austin is having Seizures

Godfreyc - I agree with mmgy based on our experience with a 4 yr old rescue dalmatian. He had grand mal (sp?) seizures and we finally figured out what triggered them (trash collection in the alley, lots of company with him inside, cars racing in the alley, etc.) and while he was on phenobarbital for about 1.5 years, we eventually weaned off that and he never had another seizure. Poor Austin - he's having a hard time stopping the "wandering man" inside himself and loving the life that most of our dogs "expect"....Here's hoping that he gets accustomed to the good life and those old seizures go away....

Re: Austin is having Seizures

vicki, I totally agree. He loves to be with us but I think he's having a really hard time with adjusting to life with people. I'm sure he's torn between spending time with us and chasing a cat down the street. Even the vet said he doesn't know a stranger. One positive sign is this morning when I showed him his bone full of cheese and peanut butter then threw it in his crate he followed it in YEEAAHHH he hasn't done that before. Of course he let me know as I was leaving he wasn't happy. ;) He also does better if the crate is near us and once I've put my bedroom back together I may try to find a spot for the new crate in our room.
