Preventic collars

I bought Preventic collars for everybody on Tuesday when the Grrrrls visited the vet/chiro. Just took the Grrrls out for a walk through the woods/fields, found ticks walking about on them, and then decided that perhaps the collars would work better if they're ON the dogs.

So I put the collars on everybody and Bort was sooooo excited. For you see, dogs in my house never wear collars unless going out for a walk, or going to training, and since Bort never goes to training, collars mean W-A-L-K!! Hahahaha, poor Boo! :)

Re: Preventic collars

I also just bought and put on the Preventic collar. Does anyone here know if I should be concerned about Mia sleeping in my bed with the collar on? The collars are so new in my area that the assistants at my vet's office didn't know anything about the collar.

Re: Preventic collars

Well, the dogs seem to be fine, but I have a nasty rash all over my face, suddenly and the only thing that has changed in these collars. It's so bad the RN's at the ER made me go get seen today. Doc had no idea what really caused it, but it's red, raised and painful. I think the collars are not long for this world.

Re: Preventic collars

Julius' Preventic collar has been on for a little under a week now.

He used to be allowed on the bed & furniture but now is not allowed on them anymore because of the cat. We're trying to have them not share their sleeping spaces.

Gretchen---I read on the package about the collars having an effect on people with sensitive skin. I've got really sensitive skin (can only use one type of lotion, soap, etc. & break out in hives frequently) but :KNOCK ON WOOD: nothing has happened yet. I'm praying that I don't have a reaction to it.

Re: Preventic collars

That's a bit scary. I'm wondering if this collar is worth avoiding pulling out ticks. Ticks are just so nasty that I decided to try the collar. Mia gets ticks ALL the time and they are never in nice places. She's had two by her eyes. I don't think we really have a Lymes disease problem here on the west coast, though.

Re: Preventic collars

You may not have Lyme, but Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Ehrlichia are alive and well out there (also tick-bourne). People need to realize that Lyme disease is not the only tick-bourne disease out there!

Re: Preventic collars

I do believe it says to wash your hands after putting the collars on, and I would imagine that diminishs the longer they've been out of the package. Jasygirl, trust me, if your dog gets into ticks, this is the way to get them off. We've written extensively about these collars recently, have you tried a search? Gretchen, I think--and hope--you might be the rarity this time! Are you better today?

Re: Preventic collars

Actually, I first heard about the collars on this site (which has been a wealth of knowledge for me!) I recently switched vets, but my old vet had never heard of them and they are a new product for my new vet as well. I guess the collars and new out here and not many people know much about them. I was very careful to wash my hands after putting the collar on, but my concern was about Mia laying on my bed and on me while she has the collar on. I don't think there will be a problem, but I wondered about other's experiences with the collars. Also, I'm putting an old sheet on the furniture Mia gets on so I can wash it after she's been there. The collar will stay on unless I notice a bad reaction from it.

Re: Preventic collars

These are the reasons I avoid collars and use Advantix. Rub it in once a month and you're done. Covers fleas, ticks, and skeeters!

Re: Preventic collars

The problem with Advantix, Frontline, etc is that they can take up to 48h to kill the ticks. The diseases will transfer from tick to dog in 24h, so you still expose your pet to disease. That is the reason that I tried the collar.

I have an appointment with my regular MD tomorrow. I did wash my hands after handling the collars, and have been careful to keep the dogs away from my face (even before this rash started). After looking through color atlas's of Dermatology books, I don't think it's a contact dermatitis / allergic rxn.

Hmmmm, I didn't know this. Can the collars be used only when the dogs are outdoors in high-tick prone areas and removed when they come inside?

Well there is a 48 activation period that the collar must be on before it's effective. So if you wanted to put it on for 48 hours before you take the dogs for the hike that would probably be fine....

:)

Re: Preventic collars

Another reason I chose to go with the Preventic collar is that even though the ticks die, I still have to pull them out. Mia has had 3 ticks break apart, leaving the head in. Two of them have been right next to her eye, making getting the head out very difficult. So far, it seems to be working well. I haven't had any adverse reactions, and she doesn't seem to notice it. She does itch quite a bit more, though. I don't know if that's connected or not.

Re: Preventic collars

The Grrrls went on woods hike #2 today (of this week). Unlike Sunday's un-collared walk, there are no ticks crawling around on anyone today.

Re: me, the doc (hehehhe, I almost typed "vet") said he does think it's contact dermatitis because of the sudden onset. So I have a 5 day taper of oral steroids (lovely) to take. He said they can make you hyper.........considering I'm usually a very energetic person, this could get interesting! :D

Dogs seem to be having no problems with the collars.
