Question on neutering an adult

I know I will find all of this out later today but I can't wait. It's been a LONG time since I had a dog neutered and then it was a pup. SO bare with me,please.

How long are the stitches supposed to be in?

How long to they have to have exercise restricted?

How long to totally heal?

Thanks!

Re: Question on neutering an adult

My vet used absorbable stitches so I did not have to take him back to have them removed. Exercise was restricted for 10-14 days. If I remember correctly, the site was healed in that time. There was some swelling the first 2 days but I held an ice pack to the area (which he LOVED by the way) for five minutes 2-3 times a day and the swelling went down. He was kept overnight and I was able to get him the following afternoon (his surgery was 8am). Rocco was 12 months at the time.

Re: Question on neutering an adult

On an adult dog, do they remove the skin and all? I know on pups they leave the sacks and they eventually disappear. I was wondering if that happens on adults too or what?

Re: Question on neutering an adult

Chance had a little flappy skin there for a couple of months, but now it is slick as a button back there :)

Re: Question on neutering an adult

my sister's black lab still has his skin flap and he's 7 (i think he was neutered at 3). i was surprised because i thought that was removed. maybe it just depends on the vet???

Re: Question on neutering an adult

TJ still has his "flap" as well, and he was neutered in the spring of last year.

Re: Question on neutering an adult

The sac is left untouched. The incision is made in the groin not on the testicle...and the testicle is fished out...the cords tied off and then removed.

My vet uses no stitches for the outside skin...just glues the skin shut. It works great and have never had a dog my own or foster fuss with the incision.

Most males are back to their normal self less then 24 hours later. The hardest part is trying to keep them quiet. :D

From what I have observed with mature males....the empty sacs just get smaller...but you can still see them if 'ya look close. :)

Re: Question on neutering an adult

My male's sac has decreased to just some loose skin in that area (it's been 8 months since his surgery).

Thanks Gina - I learned something today!....(the fishing out part).....Chance is a young adult, so maybe that's why his sack has shrunk back so nicely....

Re: Question on neutering an adult

My Rome's sacks were always there. I was kind of glad because I'll admit he looked a little naked after that IMO kinda like a sissy boy :D

Re: Question on neutering an adult

I read somewhere awhile back that you can have implants inserted to maintain the look. Don't know where you'd find something like that. At the time I read it I didn't have dogs and I thought it was a silly idea but right after Rocco's surgery I kinda wished I could've had those for him. I know, pathetic...

Re: Question on neutering an adult

I think I'm going to ask my vet about this when Austin goes under the knife :)
