Seizures???

I have a question, more for my piece of mind than anything. I had an 8 year old female that passed away this november. She was a very healthy and vibrant 8 year old, could out walk my 11 month old anyday :) Then one day she was laying on the floor chewing on a rawhide bone when she started having what at the time we thought were convulsions,to make a long story short, we thougth she had choked. Which she did have her rawhide in her throat so my hubby pulled it out and she was very disoriented we took her to they vet the next morning and he gave her a shot to help boost her. And she was fine.

That weekend she did it again and that is when we found out she was having seizures. She would become totally disoriented for a day no footing, walk into walls and then kind of off for a few days, we took her and first they ran blood tests for everything they could think of and it all came back as fine. So my vet said lets wait and see she could just have occassional seizures and we could put her on meds. Five days later my baby girl went into one and never came out of it. We had to have someone pick her up and put her to sleep. And I justcan not be at ease with what caused her to go from such a happy and healthy girl to completely gone in a matter of about two weeks.

Sorry this is so long just wondering if anyone had any info on what it could be it just bothers me soooooo much,as I am sure you all can understand. It was so hard to lose her but the awful way it happened and the not knowing what was wrong bothers me.

Thanks for hangin in there!

Re: Seizures???

You may never know, unfortunately - such a wide range of things can cause seizures. But intense, prolonged seizures like you describe are very hard to control, and are extremely damaging (every seizure causes a bit of brain damage, but the longer and more severe the seizure is, the more damage it causes), I don't expect it's much consolation, but there probably wasn't much you could have done for her. Sorry.

Re: Seizures???

Thank you it really is. I had no idea that each one caused brain damage. I just hated watch her go through it and the last day before she had her seizure she seemed lost even had accidents in the house. Which had NEVER happened before. So it does give me some consolation because at least I know she did not suffer for long.

Thanks again

Re: Seizures???

I don’t know much about dog seizures/epilepsy, but I do know a great deal about human seizures/ epilepsy and have to deal with it very often. But I suppose epilepsy is comparative in all a living creatures.
Epilepsy differs from person to person and the kind of seizure can differ to the same person too. Some kind of seizures will continue not matter what kind a life you live or what medicine you take. Other will get rid of seizures with the right medicine. Mostly all seizures will stop and is not deadly, but as Spidey stated, it causes a brain damaged each time. But if a person gets into “ status epilepticus” (gets out of a seizure and the next starts in a few min. and so on and so fort) it’s really serious and deadly if not treated immediately.

Some people are affected more than a week before and also after a seizure, some have “aura” (warning) of all kind just before the seizure and other just tumble to the ground and when it's over… some sleeps for hours or days and some just raise and continue what they were doing. There really are no rules.

The ONLY true rule I have learned in 30 years work with lot of people with epilepsy is from the patients: I know when you are holding me, I hear when you are talking and I can feel you are taking care of me!!!

That’s what we can do and nothing more!

I am sorry for your loss :( but being there was all you could do!
