Seizures

Hi. As most of you can tell I'm pretty new to this website, but have found a great deal of information. However, I need some advice. I have a 6 year old female Rottie who was spayed several years ago. She lives in Florida with my father. Anyways, not so long after she was spayed, she developed seizures. The vet has put her on phenol barb. ~*sp*~ twice daily and has had to increase the dosage due to increasing seizures. The vet says that having her spayed has nothing to do with the seizures, and that they can't explain them. I suppose my question is, has anyone else experienced this?? She hasn't had one in awhile, thank goodness, but when she does, they seem to be getting worse and take longer for her to come out of them. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Seizures

I'm sorry. Has the vet done any other tests? Seizures which develop late in life are almost always due to something else (liver problems, kidney problems, blood sugar problems, brain tumours, etc), and only rarely due to epilepsy. I'd at least want a full blood panel done on her. It's probably got nothing to do with the spay, and the timing is likely just a coincidence.

Thank you spidey, for your reply. She has had several work ups, by several different vets, and they have all ruled out the above mentioned. She is a very and I mean very large female. She blew up like a blimp after her spay, no matter what we fed her. We put her on a strict diet, except for when she gets her meds. She takes them in little cut up pieces of hot dogs. It is just hard for me because I love her so, and we are in different states. I've thought about moving her up here, but the vet suggested against it, saying that the shock of the move may cause a seizure that I may not be able to pull her out of. I did however speak with the vet this afternoon, and after waiting for hours, he faxed her file to me. Turns out, since they didn't find anything causing her seizures, she is listed that she has epilepsy. I didn't know that but my grandmother did, and she is very forgetful and didn't tell me.

But the vet told me to continue the meds, and she should live a happy, normal life, as long as she continues the meds. Again, thank you.

Re: Seizures

It sounds like the phenol barb may not be controlling her seizures. Were dialantin levels ever done on her? Has she ever been seen by a vet that specializes in treating seizure disorders?

No, she's never been to a vet that specializes in seizure disorders. My father will be doing some searching for them. But what I have noticed is she has more seizures during the summer, when the bufo toads are out like gang busters. It could be their poison, if she is playing with them. Like I said, it is just hard because of the distance factor. But my father is doing all that he can do to help. I've looked at her file that was faxed to me, and I don't see anything about dialantin levels, and working in the medical field, that should be one of the things that I should have suggested. :(

Re: Seizures

She is in Miami Florida. My father has taken her to several different vets there and in Homestead, and they are all saying the same thing. It is just frustrating when you know something is wrong, and they can't pin point the exact diagnosis.

Re: Seizures

Just to throw it out there, I will tell you that we have a dog (Nottweiler) that had seizures for years with no explanation. We changed her diet and she stopped having them almost immediately. I never would have thought of this as a cause. I don't know what your vet would think but it may be worth asking. You never know.

Thank you. I never thought of that either. Right now she is on Neutro Weight Control..I think that is it. I know it is Neutro for weight control. But I will ask my vet about that. Thanks again.

Re: Seizures

Hey sorry hear what your girl is going through. And I can understand your frustration I had an 8 yr old that out of the blue started having seizures. I have a few questions. Since the first one how frequent are they? And how long do they last? Just a few questions I have personally.

I wish you the best of luck and keep us posted I really would like to know if you find anything out. With Annie they never did find out what was causing hers. So I am curious to know what you find out.

Thanks. Well, last year, she had them about once or twice a month during the summer. She hasn't had one since November, thank goodness. Sometimes they last a few minutes, I would say no longer then 5 minutes. She loses control of her body functions, foams out of the mouth and her eyes are rolled to the back of her head. My grandmother just holds her head, pets and rubs it...talks to her and tries to bring her out of it.

When I find out anything, I will be sure to let you know. Thanks again. :)
