? Re. Urinary Infections

I need some advice on this subject. My spayed 5 year old Rottie has had 2 bouts of urinary infections (technical name I can not remember for the life of me right now). A pill was prescribed and the problem went away. However I am noticing that she is licking her groin area again and urinates several times while outside. She is exhibiting the same type of behavior as when she was diagnosed with a urinary infection. Now my male dog is sniffing the back end of her, which makes me think that she has something going on because he usually does not bother with her. She isn't in any pain or anything like that. I was just wondering why she seems to be prone to getting this and is there anything (supplement, etc...) that I could give her to diminish these infections?

Re: ? Re. Urinary Infections

It is possible that she is incontinent. My 9 year old spayed bitch is and has been since she was 4. Spaying often causes urinary incontinance as the spay often renders bladder not as elastic as it once was. When my bitch is leaking she licks and licks like that to keep herself clean. My male will also follow her around and clean her.

A simple course of propanalomine should do the trick if that is the case.

No. I don't think so because she doesn't urinate or "leak" in the house at all. I don't see no evidence of that anyways .

Would a urinalysis determine her exact problem (if anything)? If I could do something to prevent this from reoccurring, then Daisy and I will both be very happy.

Just because you do not see it does not mean it is not occuring. A bitch does not have to be noticably leaking in order to be incontinent.

Go ahead and have a urinalysis run. You might also want to have a BUN run. If they come back negative, I would have the vet her on propanalomine. Its very inexpensive and cannot hurt.

Re: ? Re. Urinary Infections

My girl has had urinary tract issues since she was 3 months old. She constantly has a pussy substance around her VG (as we call her private place). She consistently went misdiagnosed for several months because the Vet said it was normal to have discharge until she was fixed and to make sure we wiped it away. Finally, I got firm with the vet and said I wanted a urine test. Sure enough, there was infection present. I don't think she has fully recovered from it.

Needless to say, I have stopped going to that vet!

I also am prone to UTIs and have been recommended cranberry juice or anything acidic for my own good health. I know they make pills you can take instead of drinking the juice so I plan on asking my vet next time I go, if this will help prevent the UTI's in my dog.

You can most absolutely give her cranberry pills. i know many people who do this/take them themselves.

Re: ? Re. Urinary Infections

Grab a sample for the vet. I'll bet she has the infection back because they are so hard to get rid of. Sometimes it takes a very strong antibiotic for an extended time to knock it out....Cranberry capsules are good and I have also heard Apple Cider Vinegar..but you have to know for sure whatever you try.

Re: ? Re. Urinary Infections

We used apple cider vinegar and it seemed to help. Apparantly you have to use the "raw" kind. It can easily be found in the health food section at the grocery store. I also looked up homeopathic remedies and found some fairly inexpensive little pills (can't remeber the name). They seemed to work really well for us as far as any incontinence problems (if that does start).

We had a reccurring infections with Jena and the vet drew me a diagram explaining that some dogs have a mis-shaped bladder with a little pocket. What happens is there will sometimes be a little leftover pee that just sits there and eventually will cause an infection because the bladder doesn't empty all the way and the pee "goes bad". This is the way I understood it, anyone feel free to correct me.

Re: ? Re. Urinary Infections

Thanks everyone. I will definitely take Daisy to the vet and demand a urinalysis. I will also look into those cranberry pills.

Thanks again everyone for the advice....Nicole

Re: ? Re. Urinary Infections

The Cranberry capsules are more effective than the juice because you cannot drink (or dog cannot drink) enough of the juice to be as effective. Also, remember that you want them to drink more, not less water to keep the system flushed out.

Now this may be a stupid question....but do I need to get a prescription from the vet for cranberry capsules or can I just pick them up at a local Wal-Mart or health food store? How much do I give (1 mg. per lb., etc...)? I didn't know if they were one in the same (vet -vs- health food store).

Healthfood store has them. Don't know about Walmart. With most things of this sort, if an adult Rottweiler you would use the suggested dose for an adult human.

Re: ? Re. Urinary Infections

Yup, Wal Mart & Target both have them. That's where I purchase mine. :)
