Gastroenteritis please info

Roxy started with diarrhea and vomit, first day I didn't give too much importance, she still eat and play, second day she sleep all day and finally since she refused to eat and keep having the same simptoms I took her to the vet, thinking the worst (Parvo) but no, gastroenteritis. So the vet gives her antibiotic tablets (enterotab) and a primperan (sp?) shot to stop the vomiting..... 20 min after she vomits the chicken breakfast and the tablets and now she is sleeping and feeling miserable. She lost 2 lbs. I call the vet but I can only contact his asssistant that speaks little english, so I don't know if I should give her the tablets again or wait. Please help... I feel terrible I should have brought her before to the vet.
She is current all shots and the temp was normal.

Re: Gastroenteritis please info

First of all....calm down...take a deep breath and relax. :)
Gastro is common and she will get over it. For now...just let her gut rest...don't give her any food , just water for 12 hours....then cook up some rice and offer her a small amount. If she does o.k....meaning no vommiting...then at her next meal give her some more rice and some boiled chicken or boiled ground beef.
I know that you are feeding her BARF...for now just stop feeding her any raw food till everything settles and introduce it back slowly....try cooking her food for awhile.

If she is having a hard time keeping water down...just let her drink small amounts at one time or let her chew on an ice cube.

She will not starve to death in a few days even if she is not eating much. :D

Hope she feels better soon.

Gina

I second everything Gina said! Stay with the tablets as long as your vet said to, and let her rest for a few days.

Hmmmm. That's a question for your vet. Offhand, I would say the vomiting/diarrhea pills could be given on an empty stomach, but that an antibiotic should be accompanied by a bit of food, if she has an appetite.

There again, I wouldn't offer much food, probably not more than a 1/3 of her usual the first day or two. When she keeps it down well, and looks perkier, then start increasing.

I second everything here. My cairn terrier went through a bout of this. No food, just water for a while. Let her tummy rest.

Re: Gastroenteritis please info

ok, she sleeped all night and in the morning I started with very little water, after two hours a little chicken broth, she is much more active and looks recovered, so I just gave her some white rice and boiled chicked (and the antibiotics) and I am crossing my fingers she keeps it inside! Thanks to all! :D
