Sarcoptic Mange

Anna and one of our Goldens each have a very small (smaller than a dime), spot of Sarcoptic Mange. We were able to treat the mange quickly, and it is almost gone now. The problem is, I am pretty sure that they picked it up from the BYB Great Danes who share a chain link fence with us. The neighbors dogs are only out of their kennels a few times a week, but when they are out they spend the whole time leaning up against the fence trying to fence fight our dogs. The "stud", and one of the puppies look like they have patches of scabies. I am sure that the neighbor isn't going to do anything about this, even though I will offer to give him the medication to fix it. I am considering fencing off the part of the yard where we share the fence so that the dogs will not have access to it. Does anyone know how far sarcoptic mange can travel in the dirt? We have 3 acres, so I am not concerned about the loss of yard space. Do you have any other ideas to help prevent re-infection?
Thanks, Susan

Re: Sarcoptic Mange

I can't help you with the mange, but as far as the Danes, I would call Animal Control. If they do have mange and the owner is not treating it then it is considered neglect as he is neglecting his dogs of proper veterinary care.

Re: Sarcoptic Mange

Jaime,
Calling Animal Control was my first thought as well. Unfortunately, the animal control here is completely inept. I have called on much worse cases of neglect since moving here, and we didn't get any action from them.
Thanks, Susan

Please watch yourself too.... I picked this nasty mite up from a dog at the kennel where I used to work...... NOT pleasant!

Re: Sarcoptic Mange

Keep calling Animal Control until you get results - and get photographs of the living conditions of the dogs and if possible, get close ups of the spots. If you can provide proof of the conditions they live in and the condition of the animals, the police and/or Animal Control have to do something. The more you bug 'em, the more likely they will be do respond.

You could take an ad out in a local paper, complete with photos and something eye catching about neglect in the title. If AC won't cooperate, public humiliation can often work.

Re: Sarcoptic Mange

I found on a website that Interceptor, Sentinel, and Revolution are effective against Sarcoptic Mange

Here's the site: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body...tic_mange.html . It's about half-way down the page under Treatments.

And it also seems from what I've read that the mites do not travel far on their own and that animals get it by either coming into contact with the carrier itself, or brushing up against something that the carrier has brushed up against(in your case, the fence).

Hope this helps a little.

Jaime

Yes, Revolution works fabulous for mange. :)

Re: Sarcoptic Mange

The dogs have been on Sentinel for the last 6 months. It looks like I may have to switch back to Revolution.

That does make sense. The two that actually got spots of mange are the ones who will lean against the fence and try to "lick through", to the Danes. None of the other dogs do this, and none of them got mange. I will just fence off the area so that they can't get back there.

I will also keep working on the animal control. Taking pictures is a great idea, I will definitely see if that helps.

Thanks again for all of your help, this board is the best! Susan
