Tylenol...just wondering, confused actually

I have seen a few times that tylenol is on the don't give to your dog list of human meds (or at least not recommended) but after Tank's TPO surgery, they sent him home with tylenol with codeine....so I'm confused.... :(

Re: Tylenol...just wondering, confused actually

Cindy, every once in awhile there's a big "to do" over on the ortho list about this. Tylenol IS, to the best of my limited knowledge, on the "do not give to dogs" list. My thinking is that means the Tylenol only dosage. Usually the amount of Tylenol in T with C is reduced...personally I don't like to use it...but I'm perfectly comfortable giving Rimadyl (with the proper percautions, of course) and other folks think it's right up there with rat poison.

You hear both that Tylenol is reasonably safe for dogs in the right dosage and that it's horribly toxic - as far as I know the current data says that it's fine in the correct dosage. Cats don't do well with acetaminophen (the active ingredient in Tylenol) at all, because of their short digestive tract.

Okay, still confused ..but since the vet prescribed it, (he's done with it now) he took it, but I'll never give him Tylenol myself... :)

Probably smart to check with your vet first before giving any human medication. I did a bit more looking and it seems that the problem with Tylenol toxicity is that people just give way too much, if you give it at appropriate doses (as prescribed by your vet), it should be fine.
