| New Osteosarcoma Treatment Study New Osteosarcoma Treatment Study Donaldson-Atwood Cancer Clinic TYPE OF CANCER Osteosarcoma in Dogs Name of Clinical Study New Osteosarcoma Treatment Study Principal Investigator Sean Aiken, DVM Dipl American College of Veterinary Surgery Overview: Osteosarcomas are dangerous bone tumors which spread quickly and are minimally responsive to standard therapies. Treatment - Osteosarcoma is usually treated with surgical removal of the affected leg (amputation). After Treatment - Because osteosarcoma usually spreads to the lungs, chemotherapy is used after amputation. Purpose of This Clinical Trial: The purpose of this study is to determine whether a novel, new treatment applied just before surgical amputation will increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy. This research is being done because there is a need for more effective treatment for osteosarcoma involving a leg. To be Eligible For this Study, your Dog Must: 1) have osterosarcoma on a front or back leg that has not spread to the lungs or other sites. Protocol Your pet must have a biopsy of the leg to confirm the presence of osteosarcoma. This can be done at your local veterinarian, or performed at AMC. Then, under anesthesia, a small device is inserted into the tumor on the leg. The leg is then amputated as is standard for this cancer. The dog then receives follow up chemotherapy. Medical Costs This trial pays for a substantial percentage of treatment for this cancer which would otherwise be very expensive. If you believe your pet may fit onto this study, please call the appointment desk at 212-838-8100 or 212-329-7053 and ask for an appointment with Dr. Sean Aiken, or ask for a “new patient oncology visit.” They will facilitate the appointment process for you.
