vomiting

For the past few nights we've been waking up to Diesel vomiting in his crate. Well, we wake up to the sound of dry heaving. I think he probably does this during the day also because when we get home the crate and him STINKS!!!

It's a white foaming vomit. To the best of my knowledge he has not ate anything. He's always putting everything in his mouth, but we are not taking him to the backyard as much now, but out front on the leash.

Diesel is almost 4 months old, he eats 3 - 3.5 cups of Canidae a day. He doesnt seem lethargic. His skin is fine. Very playful and eats all of his food.

I'm looking through the Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook right now before I call the vet. Any ideas???

Thanks.

Yeah - GO TO THE VET.
Vomiting can mean many things: blockage, poisoning, virus, bacteria. Just because he seems fine now doesnt mean he is, they tend to be very stoic dogs. If you tried pepto or kaopetate and he is STILL vomiting after 24 hours, I would be sitting in my vets office when they opened.

Made an appointment

Well, I will be going to the vet at 2:15. I would rather err on the side of caution. Hopefully it is nothing. And of course, my illness part of our pet insurance doesn't kick in until December 1!!! Isn't that always the way it works!

Doesn't seem like enough food

Hi Tara, I could be wrong but the amount your feeding doesn't seem to be enough. How many times a day does he eat bc when they throw up a foamy substance and or yellow bile that indicates an empty stomach? If you're saying he's fine otherwise, I say up the food alittle bit and he should be eating 3 times a day at that age. I hope this helps. Perhaps you can try this before you you make a trip to the vets. Don't get me wrong, by all means if you think he needs to be seen by a vet then please take him but if he seems normal otherwise and WANTS to eat then give him alittle more each time or in between give some plain yogurt but we've been all through this with Czar and it's ALWAYS been that his belly was empty. Now if that doesn't work then a vet visit is in order and are you sure he didn't get into anything?

Please let us know if increasing his food helps and if he doesn't seem interested or doesn't want to eat then perhaps it is a medical problem.

I hope that you find out what's up with Diesel. If Julius were doing this I would be taking him to the vet. I wouldn't want to wait until the holiday weekend when most offices are closed & something were to happen then. Please let us know what you find out. :)

we went to vet

Spent $140....took x-rays and saw nothing in his stomach, there was some stuff in his colon, but he is passing that. They gave us some meds to give him 2 times a day 30 minutes before he eats. Hopefully that will help.

We are feeding him 3 times a day. I was going by the feeding guidelines on the Canidae website. It says for 25 - 50 lbs it says to feed 2 - 4 cups per day. Diesel weighs 34 lbs as of today.

I will try upping his food starting Friday when we get a new bag....almost out of the current one!!!! Hope we don't run out.

Will be keeping a close eye on him

Thanks!

Update

I have started feeding Diesel a little more (which he loves!) and so far so good...no more vomiting! On Thanksgiving, since we were almost out of dog food, we bought ground beef and mixed that in with their kibble...boy did he love that!

Tara, glad to hear it and you'll see he'll have days where he'll want to eat like a pig and others where he will hardly eat. Usually when they go through growth spirts , that's when they can't seem to get enough. As long as he's not fat or putting on too much weight, let him eat and after 15 minutes or so then pick up his dish if he didn't finish.

Give Diesel a hug from me:D .
