It's true. It is common in certain lines and unheard of in others

It used to be quite common.

The Smaalandstovare is like a light boned houndy Rottweiler and they are supposed to be born with a stumpy tail. Not tailles but short. That is what most naturally tailless Rotts look like (and what I would not give to have a real Smaalandstovare)

Any dog can be born without a tail, regardless of breed. It's more common in some breeds than others, but it can happen to any dog. My dog has three tail vertebrae, that's what he was born with (he's of a breed where tails can be full, natural stubs or docked, and puppies with varying degrees of taillessness are extremely common).

I know this isn't the subject but where did you learn about Smalandsstovare, it is a Swedish breed. Not very common breed, it isn't a lot of the there either.

I've known about Smalandsstovare since the late 80's early 90's

A friend of a friend saw a bunch at some hound show overseas and said THAT's what your friend Diane should be raising.

LOL I have yet to even find a Smalandsstovare breeder who would give me the time of day, let alone allow one of their dogs to be exported to the US. They seem to have a pretty wide range of head types but overall nice dispositions and a naturally stumpy tail
