What human drugs can you give your dog

Every now and then, I hear or read of people giving their dogs "human" drugs.

The last one I read about was pepto bismol.

Could somebody list the drugs that are OK to give to your dog and when you would use it? What drugs should you NEVER give to your dog?

I think it might make an interesting thread.

I would especially love to hear from MaryDVM!

Mmm...antihistamines (Benadryl etc) & aspirin are OK...and if a dog needs prednisone they take the same as people do. My significant other takes pred for rheumatoid arthritis, and when I still had my old dog they had the same drug & same dose so he kept getting the bottles confused & taking Phoebe's pred. So they shared. :)
Also many of the antibiotics are the same.
Also dogs are sometimes prescribed Prozac for anxiety.
Also estrogen.

NEVER give Tylenol (ibuprofen?) or similar. I think it can cause some sort of anemia & is fatal in larger doses.

That's all I can think of for now. I'd like to hear from MaryDVM on this one too!

I used to work at a vets and actually about 90% of the drugs are the same drugs that are prescribed to people as well. But I would NOT give a dog someones meds, dosages and times given can be different.
And Tylenol is a NO- NO for dogs.

I just remembered - years ago I got ringworm from my dog. I was using some stuff from the pharmacy & it wasn't working. My vet said it was fine to use the cream prescribed for my dog and voila! Cleared it right up.

Tylenol is acetaminophen, ibufrofen is Motrin and Advil. Neither are okay for dogs, to my knowledge.

There are many, many, drugs that are used for both humans and canines, but they really need to be prescribed or recommended by a vet. It really scares me when clients open their medicine cabinets to treat their pets without any guidance, or understanding of what the effects of a given medicine are.

My vet prescribed Kodi Prilosec for his vomiting (Kodi has renal failure). Humans take it for heart burn. Kodi has done great on it....no vomiting for several weeks now..:)

That link is a great summation of human/ pet meds. One thing to note is that Kaopectate was recently reformulated so that the active ingredient is bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto Bismo;) ). Don't bother buying both products. Also, don't be alarmed if the tongue or stool is black for a while after a dose, the bismuth does this.
