Leg Issues...

Not an hour ago Gus and I were outside playing. We were going over the 'down' command, Gus did the down position and got a treat.

After he got done eating the treat he got up, like he regularly does, and all of a sudden he is yelping. It turns out, he is unable to walk on one of his back legs, I believe it is the left, although I didn't get a good look at it. As he was trying to walk he had it tucked under his body and he layed down again.

After Gus layed down, I massaged both of his legs, stretched them out--no yelping. Again he stood up, and started yelping again. I grabbed him and brought him into his kennel.

I have no idea what is going on with him or what I should do. I've called my father (who is a vet) and will be going out to see him tonight with Gus, but in the meantime what can I do?

thanks for your help.

Keep him confined and quiet until your dad can take a look at him. I'm betting he either tweaked a muscle or he tore an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). You can do a search of the forums and find tons of information on that subject.

Best of luck to you and Gus, I hope he feels better soon.

This sounds like he has torn his cruciate ligament.

This problem is becoming so regular with Rottweilers, there are 3 current posts on this forum with recent injuries of this type.

My 2 1/2 yo girl has had TPLO surgery on both legs and I wonder if we should not look at this problem when selectively breeding.

I feel there is a problem with angulation causing these problems.

update

I went to check on Gus--he was asleep with both legs extended behind him. I followed him down the hall to the kitchen and I am not sure if he is limping or not, because both legs seem to be stiff at this point. He is laying by my feet as I type with both back legs extended.

Good signs?
