rottie girl, I am sorry. This must be so tough for you...it can be hard to let go, sometimes.

You and your dog are in my thoughts too.

rottie girl,

I am so sorry your girl and you are having to go through this. Your vet sounds confident that this is an injury and not related to the tumor. I'm in complete agreement with a second opinion to see if you can pin down a definitive diagnosis.

In the meantime, if you need to use a towel around her belly to help her move, cut a hole in it (or simply a big "X") a bit larger than the tumor to keep any pressure off of it. That may be more comfortable for her and make moving her easier for you.

I'll be thinking of you two also, please let us know what the ultrasound reveals.

Rottiegirl,
I too am sorry to read about your dog. A year ago I let my 7 1/2 year old male go because of these same symtoms. He was fine on Sat and then Sun he started stumbling and falling like he was drunk. (only his hind legs). On Monday my husband took him to the vet and he was given some medication but my husband said the vet also did some kind of test with needles in his skin??? It was accute displaysia. I have a wonderful vet and he said lets give him a few days on the medicine. We owe him that to try. I did but by Wed, he couldn't walk at all and I called the vet back and asked him to put him to sleep. He came to my house and did it. He couldn't tell me that I should let him go but when I asked him to, he told me I made the right decision. I agree in allowing the dog to go with the dignity they greatly deserve for being such loving loyal companions. It's hard to let go but please know that if you do make that decision, you have done the right thing and your dog will thank you for it.
Sincerely and in my prayers,
justrj

Forgot to mention, my dog was in alot of pain and many X-rays were performed as well. Surgery was not an option.

A very caring English gentleman examined her last evening.

He doesn't believe it is an injury as this wasn't sudden, but rather a deterioration over 15 days at which the tumor in her abdomen continued to grow rapidly and other smaller ones have appeared within the last week.

Because she has no pain in her legs it could be Degenerative Disease of the Nervous System but more likely he believes that the tumors are cancer (metastasis) and that they have spread to her spinal cord causing complete hind end paralysis.

He said he very sorry, there is no treatment other than Prednisone which she is already taking in high dosages. He told me she is on the best medication possible and if there was any signs of improvement he would agree to give her more time, but there isn't, in fact it is quite the opposite. He said give her another 1-2 days to be entirely sure.

He also indicated that yes he could x-ray or do an ultrasound if I insisted on a more precise diagnosis but when the prognosis is extremely poor and her age is taken into consideration, he asks why.

He was faxing his opinion to my vet.

I have called my vet and left a message for Dr. Ron to call me. I'd like to make an appointment for preferable tonight (or tomorrow) to send her to the bridge. :( It's the best I can do.

Sounds like you received a very thorough and personal second opinion. I hope that, if nothing else, that helps ease your mind. We'll be with you in spirit.

I am so sorry to hear about your girl. As the owner of a senior dog myself, it always breaks my heart to hear about things like this.

Have peace in the knowledge that you did not rush to judgement and you are relieving her of her pain.

My thoughts are with you.

Dear Rottie Girl.

I am so sorry that the second opinion confirmed what you feared all along. At least you can take comfort, or will eventually, that you tried to give your girl every chance. My heart goes out to you.

I'm sorry. I know that this is not the news that you wanted to hear. I pray that you find peace in giving your girl the greatest gift of love that you can give her.

rottie girl,

I'm so sorry the news wasn't better. :( Now you can help your sweet girl to the bridge without any doubts. Give her a big kiss from all of us and tell her some of ours will be at the bridge to welcome her. Don't forget to take care of yourself, too.
