| The importance of Vaccinations.... There has been an outbreak of a strain of the Corona Virus in my area.... from the sounds of MaryDVM's "I've had it" thread, there are also outbreaks of Parvo going around. It is SOOOO important to get your puppies vaccinated on schedule!!!! I have a close friend who's 12 week old puppy is fighting for her life with this Corona Virus - she was vaccinated properly, but evidently, her titers were not high enough to fight off the bug. A whole litter of pups was dropped off as well, at the same vet's office.... Please, PLEASE make sure you are caring for your pups properly by vaccinating them on schedule... think of it as an "insurance policy" Just a friendly reminder... Elisabeth |

| A very good reminder! Elisabeth, thankyou for taking the time to remind everyone the importance of vaccinating when they're pups and especially that first year. Just the thought of a sweet little puppy fighting for its life bc the owners were negligent:( , makes me sick. Thanks again! Czar sends sloppy kisses! Judy |

| IF the pups are "fighting for their life" with this illness then either it is not really corona or it is a strain different from the one the vaccines cover MOST vets I know don't use corona vaccines because it is not a life threatening disease in the least. Many cases of so called corona are actually parvo or some other viral (not vaccinatable) diarrhea OVER vaccination causes as many or more problems than undervaccinaton does. The best method is for the pup to be vaccinated with a quality vaccine like Progard (Galaxy, Sentrypar, Biocor, adenemune are proven to NOT be good performing vaccines in this breed!) a couple times 4 weeks apart (like 8 and 12 weeks) and then have a titer run at 16 weeks to check distemper and parvo titers

| .. Vet tested for Parvo..... and has confirmed that this is a strain of the Corona.... This pup is exceptionally small for 12 weeks... only 12.5 lbs... it is the dehydration factor that is so dangerous for her. |

| Also, please beware of the no-name feed store / supermarket vaccines. There are actually some manufacturers who supply this market that still use Adenovirus type I in their vaccines. This virus can cause a serious reaction within the eye producing a blue discoloration that can result in permanent blindness. I saw a puppy with this last week. All the major vaccine manufacturers have been using Adenovirus type II (which has no risk of this side effect) for decades. It's unbelievable that this poor quality stuff is allowed on the market. |

| Just a note NOT ALL feed store vaccines are bad. I buy my dogs shots at my local feed store and they carry Fort Dodge ONLY! They have the 5 in 1 and also the individual parvo/distemper.

| Very good reminder! But I need to add that nothing is 100%, my Chivas was vaccinated from 6 weeks every 3 weeks till 5 months and STILL got parvo. Had it for 10 long days. I wouldnt mess around with vaccines with pups, but people also need to know that nothing is 100% and keeping your pup away from dogs with unknown vaccine historys and making sure you clean your shoes ( i was told that parvo can be very easily brought in on your shoes). Some breeds are more susupitable ( rotties being 1), so extra dilagence is needed! Kim

| How do they get Parvo Or Corona? Do they get is from other dogs or can they get it from any animal? (Just got Corona and Parvo yesterday!) |

| Parvo is a "fecal-oral" transmition. Which means that the pet has to injest some fecal matter of a dog that had the disease. This can be carried in dirt on your shoes or just on the dogs feet. If they lick the dirt that is infected they can contract the disease. The worst thing about parvo is it is very resilient and can live for many many months in the soil even through freezing temps. I don't know how corona is transmitted

| Can a dog contract parvo from a cat? |
|

| Coronavirus is also transmitted by ingestion of infected fecal material. Various strains have a predilection to a specific species, so is it unlikely that a dog would contract it from a person or other species of animal. |

| An outbreak of acute deaths in 2 different shelter cat populations has been traced to canine parvo virus infection. In a normal situation cats don't get parvo, but apparently in situations of high stress, and high exposure(possibly with a virus mutation?), they can. The cats in this report became acutely ill, comatose, and died all within 12 hours. Post-mortem exams and virus isolation identified the canine parvovirus. This is breaking news, just read about it in a journal last month. |

| MaryDVM - Was this the story out of Cleveland? This happened in Feb and was very tragic. The APL (Animal Protective League) here had to shut-down it's facility for 2 wks during this outbreak. The parvo virus raced through the shelter cat population there with a fury. It was very sad as the entire cat population was effected, even the healthy cats succumbed quickly and died. kathy |

| I don't recall the locations of the shelters, but that was probably one of the situations reported. Something new for cat people to worry about. |

| Re: Chivas, had Chivas been weaned for at least 10 days prior to the first vaccine? My vet says this is a must or the puppy can still have some of mom's immunity and the vaccine might not be as effective.
