Shot protocol

I have been reading the new studies on shots, that it seems to be being borne out, that 3 years between shots is the best way to go now. I am wondering how everyone here feels. We have 2 rescue pugs, they are 14 and 16, prior to being placed with us 2 years ago, they had lived their whole lives with a guy who fed and watered them, Period. They have never had shots. And are both healthy. The problems we are seeing are all related to their advanced age. We had to have all their teeth removed when we first got them, but other then that, nothing! So I am wondering, is it just dumb luck they are so healthy or is the thinking on over using shots valid? I will always have my guys vaccinated, dont get me wrong, but I am wondering about the lenght of time between each series of shots.
