Yelp when yawning

Every morning when I get up, Zeus, 18.5 week male, will get out of his crate, do a big stretch and yawn. This is normally when he "talks" to me. This morning, however, he yelped while yawning. I noticed, but didn't think much of it. But just seconds later when he yawned again, there was another yelp.
The yelp sounded like if a little paw gets stepped on. His behavior is totally normal, aside from this.
Could this be teething, and when his mouth stretched it hurt his gums? Or could it be that the past couple of days we have been playing more "tug of war"? Any thoughts would be great.

I have never seen a dog yelp because of teething. This would sound more like a jaw related problem to me. I would try to very lightly manipulate his jaw to see if that caused him any discomfort. If you notice even the slightest discomfort from him, I would try to get him to see a vet ASAP.

craniomandibular osteopathy

I know I am probably looking into this too much, and he only did it this morning, but I did some looking into things jaw related and craniomandibular osteopathy came up. Are Rotts, known to be at risk to this? I will definatelt watch him, and message his jaws, and let everyone know. I guess this is just like having a child, you get worried about everything.

IMO it's worse then having a child cause they can't tell us when and where they do hurt like kids can. I have not read that craniomandibular osteopathy is any more prevalent in rotties or not. It is possible that he pulled a muscle or somehow just hurt himself somehow during the night. Freaky things sometimes happen for the darndest reasons. I'd just keep an eye on him and see what develops.

I don't know if this is the same, but usually once a day or so, my girl will do the same thing.

I assume the majority of large dogs usually stretch, backwards and forwards and then proceed to yawn, ending in that short yap for a second.?? I wouldn't think just that would be cause for concern.

I believe they are just stretching, and relieving tension. Wish I could do it with just that much effort.. :D :D

Now if there were other problems, maybe he was having trouble eating, his kibble, or chewing?? I would definitely be concerned, or if he appeared sore when you touched them??

That's what I thought when I read the post. Julius will yawn & then do a little yelp/whine when he's finishing yawning.

:)

Thanks everyone. I think he is fine, at least a hundred yawns and no more scary sounds. My girlfriend thinks I am nuts, with the worrying:D
