Chronic Renal Disease

Does anyone reading this thread have any experience, past or present, with chronic renal disease in dogs? I've been doing research but wanted to hear of real life experiences as far as successful vs. non-successful treatments. My brother's 5 year old lab was just diagnosed. He is most definitely leaning towards treating the disease since she is so young. We are not naive by any means and, again, have been researching the disease, its effects, prognosis, treatments available, et cetera, but I just wanted to hear from someone else who might have had personal experience with the same problem.

Thanks.

Hi Beth - I hope you'll get some replies from those with actual experience with this disease, but here's a great site that's loaded with comprehensive info on kidney disease in the canine. It also has an abundance of info on home-prepared diets and commercial diets for the canine patient. The site owner (Mary Straus), is a moderator on a canine nutrition list I belong to. She puts a tremendous amount of time and effort into her site, in hopes of helping us to educate ourselves in ways to aid our companion animals. Best wishes -
kathy

A dog that I rescued a year ago has kidney disease. I switched him to a raw diet, he gets liquid drops twice a day that relax and soothe inflamed kidneys, and he takes raw kidney capsules twice a day. He is doing great and you would never know that he has a problem. No more drinking gallons of water and peeing every five minutes! This dog is age 5 or more, we guess.
