Pulling teeth?

My question is has anyone had to pull a puppy's tooth? Royal has 2 upper right canine teeth.( 1 baby and 1 adult there are close to the same size and tightly together)
I talked to a breeder and she said to pull it, so it wouldn't reck his bite.(show prospect) So what we tried to do is wiggle it but he is not happy about it being touched.(it is firmly in place)
And does any one know of any tricks or things I can give to him to help it ease out?
Thanks Karen

Those baby canines have very long roots. I too would recommend having it pulled - needs a vet.

Reminds me of the time Dad tied a string to my front tooth and a door knob... then slammed the door. Ouch!

At least a consult with a vet would be in order. Besides, you don't want a show prospect that doesn't like his mouth handled from you yanking that canine out yourself!

And to answer your question about a trick, Goldenseal root will help loosen a tooth, but I've never used it myself, nor do I know if ingested in any quantity would be harmful to your boy.

Good luck!

It is quite normal for canines to become doubled as the new ones come in. In raising 4 dogs from puppies, they've all done it. Vikka's final tooth died, but wouldn't fall out. Was VERY loose, but couldn't get it out. I did have her to the vet to have it pulled, but normally, I'd say wait it out a bit.

Yes, I think we "extracted" 3 of Vikka's teeth at the SchH club. But that one stubborn canine just wouldn't come out. ;)

At one point Kaiya had her top two canines completely in and the baby teeth still FIRMLY in place. I called the vet and they told me to make an appt. to have them both extracted....we were going on vacation though and I was panicked about getting it done before then. So I called my breeder and she told me to leave them, she was positive they'd come out soon. We came back from vacation and both teeth, which we couldn't move a cm. were gone.

I say wait a bit also.

I have a chihuahua from the animal shelter and he still has both baby canines. The shelter didn't pull them when they neutered him so I've just left them alone.

I've heard that smaller breeds are the ones who have the reputation for retaining baby teeth and are the ones who require extraction most of the time...larger breeds usually lose them eventually. Perhaps you should have them pulled on your little one...I've heard it can create long-term problems if you leave them in. I dunno...just a suggestion.

Just got back from the vet with baby Faith. Had to have her two bottom canines pulled. Vet said there was no way they would of come out by themselves. Who knows? Maybe they would have, but I didn't want to take a chance on ruining her bite.

My sheltie had his baby canines along with his adult teeth. Vet told me that is was possible they would fall out and possible they wouldnt! So i had them pulled, other teeth moved forward and you cant tell that he ever had extra teeth!

As was said earlier, this is more a problem in smaller breed dogs and w/ large breeds if they still have baby teeth my clinic will generally leave them. But with a show prospect I'd have them removed, cause you just don't know for sure when or if they are going to fall out on their own
