very nice post gretchen!!!!!!!!!!!! while we are on the subject of costs that was really good i bet we would suprized how many people actually go into pet ownership without a clue as to what it cost... another example a neighbor gave my daughter a kitten outside of food and regular vaccines you have around 600.00 for declawing and nuetering. since it was a male it developed urine crystals which virtually all cats get just males usually cant pass them so he needed a penile urthorescamy at the cost of 2000.00.. what it boils down to pet ownership is anything but cheap

I hope to hear how Mercedes is doing soon. Such a sad situation. This could've been avoided had this been a responsible, reputable breeder. :(

I hope to hear what the vet has to say about those wobbly legs, too!

It doesn't sound like there will be any genuine support forthcoming from the breeder, but we are not faced with challenges we can't deal with, either. "The adventure that we're ready for is the adventure that we get." So mercedes is not helpless to deal with the situation she is in, she just needs to begin taking steps in that direction.

And BostonRott is right, there are many knowledgeble people on this board who will try to help in whatever way they can. :)

Let's keep in mind that the breeder said s/he would put the puppy down as a form of emotional blackmail. If they were willing to sell a pup with problems a first time, I'm sure they'll find a way to place it a second time. Personally, I'd simply call, say I am returning the puppy and take it back.

Mercedes,
You mentioned that you thought the wobbling could be attributed to your puppy getting her tail docked. Was her tail docked between 3-4 days (as they should) or shortly before you brought her home? Usually, when they get their tails docked at such a young age they never realize the difference. If you puppy was 5-6 weeks, however, and had already learned to walk using her tail as a balance maybe this could be the reason for her unsteady walk. Did you receive any copies of the OFA certificates on the parents? This would help greatly in determining the probability your puppy could have a severe HD problem.
I wish you luck with your puppy. It's good to hear that you are pleased with her, but please spend the money to get her checked out. Sorry your experience with this "breeder" and I hope things will turn out okay.

You know, I don't know where you people live, but I'm glad that its so easy for you to just buy a rott pup from any conveinent store in your area. We had to travel 300 miles to get ours, and that was the closest place around here to buy one. You also make it seem like I'm ignorant about raising a dog. This is my first rott, but my family has been breeding dogs for 5 generations. I do have experience with dogs. Also, it is so nice that you all have thousands and thousands of dollars to throw around. I am an average working person making a normal amount of money at a job. I know the responsibility of having a dog, considering I have raised tons of dogs over the years. I know how to properly socialize dogs as well. So yeah, maby the breeder was in your book, but they were the only breeders for about 400 miles that were recomened. Our pup has numerous champion bloodlines. The breeders have a great set up, had very nice, well tempered dogs. The only reason I was asking about the hip problems is because both of the parents were OFA excellent on their hips. So, sorry I cant throw money around, but I will do anything necesary to keep my dog happy and healthy, no matter how hard and long the hours will be to work to afford it.

moondog mentioned that I am not getting support from the breeder, but I am not getting any from you guys either. I am very sad that something could be wrong with her. I have wanted a rott all my life, and now that I finally have her, everything is going wrong. This is very hard for me to deal with. I love animals, and I never would want to see any of them in any kind of pain. Ive only had her for four days but I love everything about her. She follows me everywhere. She hasnt peed in the house once yet. She just sits by the door when she needs to go out. She is so smart and so cute and I love her very much. So how do you think it feels to have all of you telling me what Im doing wrong instead of showing support and helping to make this right? I dont what anything to happen to, and I am so sad that she might be in pain. So support isnt just needed from my breeder alone. If you all care for rotts so much, you wont be telling me what Ive done wrong, because if I didnt buy this little girl, someone who wouldnt want to take care of her could have. I will do everything in my power to help my baby. So I think you all need to think about how you would feel in this position. If some of you have dealt with this, then you will know how I feel. If you havent, try to understand.

Well, mercedes, the most important thing any of us have tried to do is get you to take the puppy to the vet for a checkup. You wanted us to diagnose your puppy from a description, without any one of us having actually seen the puppy. Most of us couldn't tell you what was wrong even if we did see the puppy (me included), so I don't fully understand your complaint.

I'm glad she's doing better and I am still interested in what a vet has to say about her. :)

You know what...not all here are against your puppy! We will help you . Please keep being a member of the forums! The "one" thing that was competely wrong is that you were able to bring your pup home at 6 1/2 weeks old. I honestly hope you become a family member in here.

I did everything wrong

got my boy at 8 weeks, (later found it was more like 7) from a backyard breeder close to me. I had no idea I thought that a dog that was not bought from a pet store was a great deal.... and probably better off.
I was daM__* lucky, but I did read and become educated thanks to this forum, and people who, by the way were not out to "get " me or my pup, but wanted to educate me for the next time, so I wouldnt make a bad mistake.
My dog turned out okay physically, but like I said, I was very lucky, aand the guy who bred him has some type of conscience, because he quit breeding saying he doenst have the heart for it anymore, he has to know where they go and how they are treated and I was the only one who went back and showed him the pup, and sent pics....
Honestly I dont think anyone wants to beat you up, but I am sure they wouldnt mind slapping that breeder around a time or two. I am sure that anyone on this forum could also point you t a responsible breeder with reasonable rates within 150 miles of where you are located......
So just take the advice, I personally understand that you are attached and will not get rid of your pup, I am the same way, they call our kind saps, but so be it!
take your baby to the vet. I pray that you too will be one of the very lucky ones. You will not make the same mistake again. I wont either
