| Ear Mites Hi guys I was wondering, does anyone know any less stressful way to treat my rottie SAM who is nine months old and a whopping 90lbs. to get those ear drops in there.he go mad wild just to smell of it, hes to hard to hold down plus it to stressfull on him as well as on me..these drops have to be kept in th fridge. so the cold and irritation make him very upset. I thought of asking here due to the fact that everyone here is so helpfull. This is the best site aroundthanks guys.. Last edited by emiliorottie; 01-13-2003 at 09:32 AM. |

| Well, you've got some work to do... First, start handling his ears WITHOUT trying to medicate them. Reward him for letting you rub his ears and look inside them. After he will accept that, practice puting a cotton ball in his ear and taking it out. Only after he is O.K. with that, would I try the medication HOWEVER, don't try to put freezing cold drops in his ears! I think that would feel awful! Take a cotton ball and soak it with the medication so it will drip if you squeeze it. Warm it in your hand and then "stuff it" in his ear quickly, then massage his ear from the outside to help distribute the fluid and then let him shake the cotton ball out. Give him LOTS of praise while doing this whole proceedure and I would also suggest that you have someone help you control him. (with a collar and leash)Good luck to you.

| I would double check about that refrigerator business for the meds. I an not aware of any mite meds that require refrigeration. |

| Can it at least be warmed in the hand before administered? |

| It's storing it at room temperature that will cause the medication to go off (it warms up quickly in the ear, so it can certainly stand to be warm before it's administered). It's fine to warm it to room temperature before administering it. The cotton ball idea is a good one, because that way you're only warming the dosage you're about to use. |

| ONCE you get the ear mites problem taken care of, I would like to suggest you use Revolution, it takes care of preventative for heartworm, fleas, ear mites, and I believe it might repel ticks, though not sure. This is a once a month topical treatment you get at the vet. It is somewhat expensive compared to others, but by now, you can probably vouch for the cost of it per month to an outbreak and the hassle of ear mites. Just a suggestion. :D BTW, my girl is 97 pounds, and we pay $28 for hers.
