hiccups

Is there a reason for dogs to get hiccups? Keep in mind today is her second day with us. It seems like it's usually when she is nervous, or really excited, more so when she seems nervous. (Meeting the 3 year old nephew, the vet, new people coming in to see her...etc.)

Any ideas, should I be nervous? is it common? Is it her food?

You can relax, it's normal!

It's very common and normal for pups to get hiccups and you have no reason to worry.

Xena gets the hiccups at least once a day. By the time she's an adult, they should go away, or at least she should not get them nearly as much. :)

Since I don't know--Does anyone know at what age they actually stop getting the hiccups so much?

Brodie is a year old and I still notice him getting the hiccups. I'd say he gets the hiccups once every month or two. It could be more often, since he is home alone during the day.

Hicups are gas!

I know it sounds silly, but hicups are gas. Typically, hicups happen after eating as air is swallowed into the stomach.

Parker used to hicup after every feeding. Once time they were so strong that he actually bounced a little distance while in a sit! :D Now it's only every once in a while (he'll be 6 months on the 30th).

They'll eventually go on their own. Many times, after they burp! ;) But it doesn't hurt them. I used to joke and say that it was his stamp of approval for a good meal! :)

Birdie got the hiccups almost everyday until she was about 6 or 7 months. She hasn't had them at all since then - or at least not while I'm around!:)

Good stuff

Thanks everyone! I have noticed that she has gas....*PEEEUUU*

I'm sure her stomach is a mess just like daddy's is with all the stress and change.

Good to know it's nothing!
Thanks again!

The nerve to the diaphram is not fully developed on little pups so those spasms that cause hickups are just part of puppyhood. Not to worry.
