| Glucosamine is a supplement, not a drug. In my honest opinion, most vets (notice I said MOST) know as much about supplements as most medical doctors. If I'm sick I'll see a doctor. If I want to know what supplements to take and how much, I'll read a book or talk to a trainer. Glucosamine is for painful joints. If you don't know what's causing the pain, then one thing a vet might actually be good for is diagnosing the cause of the pain. It might not be something that would improve with Glucosamine. If that's the case, Glucosamine probably would not do any harm, but you'll just be throwing away money. The normal dosage for those pills you are describing is 3 per day for an average human. Your dog is smaller than the typical human. If your dog's condition warrants Glucosamine, I would recommend 2 per day: one in the morning and one in the evening. |

| One of my dogs was just d/xed with elbow dysplasia & the ortho specialist suggested 1200mg glucosamine/1000mg chrodritin...he said the clinical studies were inconclusive but there's really no harm in giving it, as far as side effects. But in any case, your dog should see a vet - no supplement is a cure, and if he's limping, you need to know why!

| You really need to have this back leg pain diagnosed and maybe have xrays taken. It could be a blown ACL. As for the glucosamine/chondroitin, the ortho surgeon who did the TPLO on my girl said start with 2000mg (2x a.m. and 2x p.m.) glucosamine and 1600mg chondroitin. After 6 weeks cut down to 3 caps per day 1500mg gluc. 1200mg chon. My girl is about 43Kg which I think is about 100 pounds (not sure of the conversion) The problem your dog is having may not be helped with this supplement but in any case you need to find out exactly what the problem is. If it is blown ACL then you need to have it repaired and to delay will only cause further damage to your dog. |

| My female had arthritis at age 5 and took Glucosamine(human grade) for many years and it did improve her getting around. Most say 1000mg to 1500mg per day for large dogs. Some vets are not into supplements, research on your end would be good. But I would consult a vet to check out the pain. Frank |

| Sorry all..I should have been more specific..I have taken him to the vet..and called the vet..I think she's beginning to think I'm a paranoid mom..lol...anyways..we are planning on scheduling X-Rays after the first of the new year....just to be safe. The vet said it is"most likely pano"..but "most likely" for me is not good enough..I have gotten alot of advice from different rottweiler posts and e-mail lists..and that is where I first heard of the Glucosamine/Chondroitin (sp??) I asked my vet about it, and she said it would do no harm...if nothing else, if he DID end up with arthritis, we would have a head start on easing the joint pain..but this was before I actually had the pills...I figured rather than call me vet yet again and await a call back, I'd just ask the people that all together seem to know about as much as my vet:D I have been giving him one pill a day and it's rather easy I must say, don't ask how, but I've managed to convince Chief that the pill is a treat...he even does commands to get this wonderful pill (evil, deceptive mommy;) ) I would be alot more concerned if it was a constant limp, but it is mainly after he's been lying down, it just takes him a few minutes to "loosen" up after getting up. sorry about the long post, and thanks for the responses.
