inner eye tearing (ripping)??

We saved Buddy a year ago and he is now 3 years old. I've noticed that lately he has been making HUGE eye boogers, in the mornings they cover half his eyeball. Upon looking closer it seems that the part of the eye right above the tear duct is ripping apart, but yet it has never bled. The coloring is slightly pink and does not seem to hurt him as I have pressed all around it and he just doesn't care. It's not swollen...doesn't bleed...it just seems to be ripping more. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing happening? I am so confused!

Thanx in advance for your help!
Regina :)

Don't you think this would be something that should be seen by the doctor?

Yes it will be looked at by a vet but I can not afford it right this moment! That is why I came to this board to find out if anyone has heard of such a thing..........but I appreciate your concern! I thought this board may help me get an idea of what might be happening. We do take good care of our Rotties it's just a horrible time right now!

Thanks Anyway Judi

They have this wonderful new thing these days called a credit card, you may have heard of them. :D

Sorry, but eye problems are not something to mess around with, unless you don't mind taking the risk that your dog could go blind. When you decide to own a dog, you take on the responsibility to care for your dog's health all the time, not just when it's financially convenient. Sorry to lecture, but you wouldn't believe how much I've spent in vet bills in the last 18 months, much of which I am still paying off and have made many personal sacrifices to handle.

I have to agree with Judi and Miabella. You asked for advice, and it's this: the dog needs to see a vet. Nobody can diagnose reliably accurately over the Internet, and eyes just aren't something to risk. There are some things which you'd be okay to take a "wait and see" attitude with, but not something eye-related which could be serious.

He needs medical attention

Forgive for this but I have a real problem when people who say they can't afford to take their pets to the vets. Their is ALWAYS a way to deal with a situation as critical as yours and most vets will work with you. I don't know how many pets you have but one must make sure they all can be cared for when in need of medical attention. If it were our children we'd find a way to come up with the money, grant you, a human comes first as far as caring for but when we choose to have pets they too are a part of the family and depend on us to take care of them. PLEASE, I urge you to find a way to have your boy checked before he ends up blind, then what will you do???? Without seeing him it could be so many things and when it comes to their eyes, their should be NO messing around:(. Our pets do not have a voice so please when you see visable problems that's their way of saying please help me, I'm sick:(.

Vet Bills

Most Vets will accept a payment schedule - please don't let money issues stand in the way of a necessary Vet visit. I don't know your situation but I would suggest getting humble and telling the Vet you WILL pay - just not right this minute, Is there a clinic or teaching Vet hospital that might see him at a reduced rate? - I hope you get him seen as soon as possible - His vision may be at stake - take care.

Yeah to everyone else's comments.

This situation brings up a good point many people overlook when they get into multiple pet ownership: The cost of veterinary care.

Like Laurie, I've spent plenty of bucks in recent months on my dog; not even for big issues like hip replacements or knee work. I've been nibbled on by the vets to the tune of $300.00 here and $250.00 there...and that's not counting all the food [best dog kibble, human food meat, doggy snacks], toys and equipment it takes to own a dog! I'm sure I'm in the thousands by now and it's only been 8 months.

My point being simple: dogs and other pets cost money to own. They live with us on "disposable" income - not up to the level of a child, who must by all ethics come first, but certainly ahead of a visit to the hairdresser or nail salon. Often, one must make financial sacrafices, as Miabella did, and that's so the innocent life who was her responsibility could have a good quality of life.

No one, and I mean NO ONE, should own multiple pets, especially large breed dogs, unless they have a steady source of disposable income. I know this from a practical and an anecdotal point of view. Like many people who weren't born with a large trust fund, I haven't always been especially "liquid" - with things like mortgage payments, regular bills, school loans [mine, my son's] and all the other stuff including high medical insurance costs due to my disabilities, we've been stretched at times. But...when I wanted a new dog, I did so knowing we could afford to have one, pay the necessary medical expenses and pay for high quality daily life things as outlined above.

Do NOT scrimp on your dog's vet care; take that dog to a vet, humbly ask for a payment plan and then reconsider owning more than one pet if the expenses have become more than you can carry right now. Don't let pride or a misguided sense of need for multiple pets overrule your common sense. Get your boy some medical care and keep us posted on how it comes out.

We do want what's best for the dog and you.

Sure sounds like it.

Intentionally denying your animal veterinary care when it is in need is considered animal abuse in most states.

Don't mess with your dog's health. It can be far more expensive to treat it after you've neglected it rather than treating it early.

Get him to the vet and work out a payment schedule or use a credit card. While I've seen human doctors turn away someone that is unable to pay in full at the time of service, I've never seen a vet turn away an animal that was in need of medical attention.
