more eye problems

Bodhi is having itchy red and goopy eye. Also it looks to me like the inner lid isn't pulling down off eye all the way, and he is squinting the eye. Any ideas what this might be?

Vet suggested using artificial tears for a few days to see if that will clear him up.

Trouble is that he is a new big rescue guy and does not want me to put anything in on or near his eye(s). He has not tried to bite (tho that possibility does concern me and we haven't worked on muzzle wearing), but mostly just throws his huge body around squeezes his eyes shut and tosses his head wildly. He has recently gotten to wear he will allow me to grasp him in a vet hold--but I cannot hold him in a vet hold and apply the drops at same time--and I am not sure of asking anyone but a vet to either try to hold him or apply the drops.

Cod liver oil was recommended too as an eye lubricant with some vitamins. He has grabbed that in his mouth and swallowed it. I guess at least the vitamin part did some good.

I don't see how artificial tears are going to do anything, but.....

With the dog standing beside you, hold his head pressed against your thigh with your left hand and administer the drops with your right. You can hold the head as well as use your thumb to pull up the upper eye lid with that left hand. Don't try to get the dropper too close to the eye, just hold it over the eye and squeeze. Should work just fine.

Eye squinting is a sign of entropion, which is corrected with surgery.:(

Eye squinting is merely a sign of irritation, that irritation can be caused by anything, from foreign particles like dust to allergies to entropion. I'd hope the vet would have noticed if it was entropion. :) Judi's positioning advice is good. You may also want to try approaching the eye from the side/back so he doesn't see the bottle, it's only natural to be nervous about something coming at your eye. Also, drop the artificial tears into the lower eyelid, not directly onto the eye (gently pull the lower eyelid away by placing your finger beneath it and pulling down GENTLY, and it will make a pocket for you to put the drops in), it's very uncomfortable to have drops placed directly on the eye. Also warm the drops beforehand by holding them in your hand for a while.

entropion or ectropion?

Entropion is where the lid rolls in towards the eye...Ectropion is where the lid falls or hangs away from the eye....Either one is very irritating for a dog and causes red, itchy, goopy eyes. On the other hand, he could have something in his eye that is causing the redness and somekind of infection that is causing the snottiness...

My vet gave me some kind of cream for Loki. It was to help with the irritation until we could do the surgery for her entropion. What i had to do, now i only had her for about 2 months at this point, was to get her in a sitting position and come in behind her and kinda strattle her and get her into a "headlock", roll her lower lid down and squeeze a line of this goopy crap along the inside of her eyelid and massage it in....She put up very little fight once I was holding her back end with my legs and her head with my arm...

Reno came down with a mysterious eye affliction about 4 months before he died. Apparently something irritated eyes one night, and the next morning the tissues from the inside corners of his eyes were showing a horrible red. His eyes bothered him so badly that he didn't even want to open them. I rushed him to the emergency vet who prescribed a topical steroid, which did not work worth beans. I took him to our regular vet on Monday morning, and he prescribed an antibiotic ointment, and suggested using Liquid Tears.

The Liquid Tears really did the trick. After about 3 or 4 days, his eyes were back to normal. I used the ointment morning and night, and the Liquid Tears every 3-4 hours. The vet told me that when there is swelling and irritation to the tissues around the eyes, it can block the tear ducts, shutting down the production of tears. He told me that it will often clear up by getting the swelling down and by keeping the eyes nice and moist, and that then the duct will usually slip back into place and the dog will begin producing tears on his own again.

Worked for us, so it's worth a try.

more eye probems

hello all,
I am new here and was reading about this problem. I have used a product that alot of horse people use as well, called COLLODIAL SILVER.
Its used for many things from Arthritis, stomach problems, ear infections, eczema, conjunctivitis diarrhoea (canine), cancers and more for general well being for animals and humans alike.
For eyes in general well-being we use it as a spray, seems to clear sore, red irritated eyes and conjunctivitis. We add it to our dogs water or into their mouths few days before and after being at shows, and havnt had any problems at all.

You can read more about it at www.suttonssolutions.com this is an Australian site but Collodial Silver in available around the world.
Good luck with your dogs. JHope this helps in anyway.

Benahein
