Infection

I have a 14 month old female rottweiler. For a while she kept licking her butt and I had to take her to the vet. She had her anal glands cleaned out and given an antibiotic. After taking the pills she got better. Now she is licking all over again.

Is there something that I may be doing wrong?

Thx

How do her anal glands look now? Is the perianal region a healthy pink? Do you see any bulging on either side of her rectum? Is she scooting?

Anal gland infections are bad news! I'd give your vet a call as it sounds as if they are bothering her. Maybe he can either take a look or tell you what measures you need to take medically or with diet to help curb the problem.

Thanks

What do you mean by "bad news" what are the complications. The vet didn't seem to concerned last time.

We had two dogs with chronic anal gland issues, but after we switched to a better food (Canidae, for us) they quit being so bad. Where we had them expressed every 4-6 weeks before, now it's once or twice a year.

I know several people that put a dollop of canned pumpkin in their dogs' food for anal gland health.

"Bad news" more or less because they are painful and can abscess quite easily if not caught in time.

Many times the anal glands are packed with panalog ointment to topically help things along... as well as oral AB's given...

Abscessed anal glands require surgical repair and it DOES hurt.

Firm stools make anal gland problems virtually a mute point. I sure would look hard at the food you feed and the "quality" of the stool.
