sore throat I had my Lyla in a kennel which I have used before and i have not had a problem, they are very caring with the animals. Well, I left Lyla there 10/11-10/22 and i had asked them before i picked her up to give her a bath. When i got there she was still damp. Anyway to make long story short she seemd o.k at the time. when we got home she seem a bit tired and when she tried to bark she could not as though she had a sore throat. Is it possible that she could have sore throat do dogs get cold the way we do? She had all her shots. Is there something i could do to take care of it on my own without having to go to the vet. I mean i will go if i have to. :(

Contrary to popular belief, people don't catch colds from being cold and damp, people catch colds by being infected with the cold virus. The same thing holds true with dogs (which is not to say that dogs get infected with the human cold virus, but there are some viruses dogs catch which cause runny noses and the like). The only way an infection takes place is if there's contact with an infectious agent (viral or bacterial). Some people feel that causing your body to work hard by getting cold (i.e. shivering) can make you more susceptible to allowing the infection to take hold, but you don't actually "catch a cold" simply by getting cold, there has to be exposure to the infectious agent. In Lyla's case, I'd guess that the most likely reason for her hoarseness is that she's been barking a lot (many dogs who rarely bark at home bark like Cujo when boarded, I know this from experience). She could have a sore throat or some infection, but I'd guess it's more likely that she's just used her voice too much. Keep an eye on her, if she starts coughing or doesn't recover her voice or if you see any other symptoms, I'd get the vet to check, but otherwise I wouldn't worry about it.

Sore throat-Amoxicillin Well, I took Lyla to the vet she had started sneezing terribly so she gave me 500 mg of Amoxicillin twice a day. Is that to much? please tell me! Thanks

Your vet should be more than capable of determining appropriate dosages of common drugs like antibiotics, far more capable and hopefully far more reliable than strangers on an Internet forum who can tell you any old thing with no certifiable credentials. If you doubt her abilities, why do you take your dog to her? I don't mean to attack you, I'm serious: if you don't trust your vet with something as simple and straightforward as this, how will you trust her with something tricky or serious? I don't mean to say that all vets know everything about everything, but this seems pretty straightforward. That being said, Amoxicillin dosage is based on weight, usual dose is 10mg/lb every 8-12 hours (i.e. either two or three times a day, depending on the severity of the infection), so unless your dog weighs substantially less than 50 lbs, that dose is well within standard dosages. I'm glad you took her to the vet, sounds like she picked up a bug after all, hope she's better soon. You may want to feed her yogurt or probiotics while she's on the antibiotics since they'll kill off the good bacteria in her gut as well as the bad bacteria that are making her sick.

| I had a similar situation this past summer. My rott started coughing a few days after coming home from the kennel. My vet said she probably picked up a virus there. He did do a blood test and prescribed an anti biotic.(I can't remember what) Anyway, she was better in a few more days. My old dobe/lab(14) who was kenneled with her did not catch it. Go figure! Both had had the bortadella vaccine also.
