VERY worried. hurt leg and limping He did it....he tore after a squirrel off the porch, and now is favoriung his right front leg.....yelped when he did it, I got him in the house, tried ice, he will not tolerate that for long, I gave aspirin with food, to help with pain, and for now he is on leash only for a week, with crate when we are not home, and no stairs.... WHAT else shall we do? The ememrgency vet told me NO to aspirin, YES to rimaldyl, which I promptly refused. After all, I DO have a medical background, MY vet always said aspirin with FOOD is fine for pain, and I KNOW the side affects of rimadyl. I KNOW he should be rested, is a week enough? i will be calling my REAL vet on MONDAY, but any advice til i can GET a real vet would be appreciated!

No, a week is not enough for complete healing of a soft tissue injury. Truth to tell, they say a week because they don't believe the owners will even follow that advice and as soon as the dog quits limping they let it run amuck again. A month is usually conservative for soft tissue repair.

i CAN do what it takes, just not sure what it takes, as I have heard a week, what about the aspirin, as MANY vets have told me aspirin, and rimadyl as a LAST ditch effort, for pain. I am sorry, but I am more conservative with my pets than I am myself.....they deserve it more! What about the ice, he wonr put up with that..... is it possible he BROKE something??? i think it is soft tissue, not BROKEN bones, in my opinion, of course, I have hard feelings about this vet, and any money making opportunity they see, they will jump on.i I WITNESSED this, he LANDED on something WRONG, nothing that seemed like it had enough impact to fracture something. i will for sure call MY vet monday, but I am still worried about those notorious ACL......is it possible he just pulled a muscle?am I overprotective?

The Rimadyl or asprin is not used as pain management, but rather as anti-inflamatory to assist healing. Use Ascription with Maalox to help protect the gut. When you said the emergency vet, I assumed you had gone there and they did films. If you don't see improvement at the one week period, I would consider asking for a film. Even if you do see the expected improvement, don't turn the dog loose, but continue the confinement for complete healing.

Do the films need to be done ASAP. pr may I wait til monday when my regular vet, whom i TRUST can assess the boy? I will definately rest the dog til at least a week, no matter what the vets say, but i am not in good faith of the emergency vet, good in a life or death situation, but NOT otherwise, sorta like a human emergency room, if Im not BLUE dont TAKE me there! I have had experience there before, I DO think MY vet is VERY competent......

I'd probably give the week to see if there is improvement prior to asking for films, but you must make that call yourself. You saw it happen and you can see how much the dog is favoring it.

| Well I can't help you with the medical advice but I can say... DAMN SQUIRRELS!!! They are always at fault, they are probably sitting in the trees laughing at your boy right now....;)

I may be mistaken here, but guido limped all the time, vets could not find anything wrong, I got big boy and her limp went away. Is it a attention thing? She got a lot of attention to her limp when she was the only dog in the house. Diid she take advantage of a sitution?

Comment About Icing Injuries Just wanted to make a comment about ice: I don't know if you did this or not, but just in case, you should never apply ice or ice packs directly to skin (human or animal), and this includes through hair. Applying ice directly to the skin is painful and can cause frostbite, always wrap ice in a towel before applying it. Also, you should never ice for more than 20 minutes at a time, then leave the ice off for at least 20 minutes before re-applying it. I'm just wondering if this could be why he wouldn't stand the ice for long, since ice really is the best thing immediately after an injury.

I think he is just a bit more anxious about the ice....he did not want to lay there and let me do ANYTHING.... he appears to be trying to ignor it now, I DO know it is the RIGHT front, apparently in the joint area, human equivalent to the elbow.....at least I have that narrowed down. He is either trying to pretend there is nothing wrong, so his anal momma will leave him alone, or he doesnt hurt as bad as I think he does. I prefer to think he is trying to pretend, or he forgot he hurts......I am sure the injury is there......they cannot possibly go away that fast. he really doesnt want me to touch the area at all, he seems to almost be favoring BOTH sides, front. The right seems more tender. NOT sure what he did. DAMN squrrels is RIGHT!
