Safer home-made flea and tick repellant suggestions?

I'm scaling back on loading my dogs up with chemicals...Does anybody have any reliable, safer home-made flea and tick repellants? I'm finding suggestions on the internet, but I as wondering if anybody had some first-hand experience with any?

Thanks in advance...

not homemade but my current favorite product is Ark Naturals Flea Flicker/Tick Kicker. Really stupid name but a good product. It contains Eugenol which is made from cloves and is the product the "green" pest control companies use to kill cockroaches

Also not home made but this company (Richards)makes a mosquito repellent spray as well - here is their shampoo

Amazon.com: SynergyLabs Richard's Organics Natural Flea & Tick Shampoo, 12oz: Pet Supplies

The spray has a strong smell - like a bitter peppermint - you either like it or hate it

Lola gets garlic powder in her food daily. Absolutely no fleas is 7 yrs but,I don't think this does much for the ticks as we have had to remove at least a few during this time.

Steep lemons and rosemary, strain and put in a spray bottle. Makes the dogs soft and shiny, they smell great, and it works for mosquitoes too.

Keep em' coming. I've also heard lemon juice, white (or apple cider) vinegar, garlic, and water in a spray bottle.

Re: Safer home-made flea and tick repellant suggestions?

We usually have quite a few ticks but had zero this season. At the beginning of tick season, my dogs get a bath with neem oil added to the shampoo. They get garlic daily, and weekly we apply an natural spray. I'll look up the recipe... I know it contains peppermint oil. We also apply food grade diatomaceous earth. No chemicals here.

Can you elaborate on quantities and procedure? How many lemons - how much rosemary - what quantity of water?

Re: Safer home-made flea and tick repellant suggestions?

I really like the Richard's Organics products. I think they smell like cinnamon and peppermint. Absolutely terrific and they seem to be effective.

For homemade remedies (which, by the way, I found effective in Ohio when I lived there) essential oils of geranium, cinnamon, lavender, and myrrh are reputed to be very effective. The Animal Wellness magazine has a version of this recipe in a prior issue:

10 oz distiller water
1 dash bay leaf tincture made with glycerin or cider vinegar
6 drops geranium oil
4 drops myrrh oil
4 drops cinnamon oil
4 drops clove oil
2 drops lemongrass oil

You can add/subtract what you like. Store in a blue or amber bottle, away from direct light. Shake prior to use.

Re: Safer home-made flea and tick repellant suggestions?

I used two lemons and about 3 sprigs of rosemary. I don't think it matters a ton. if you can smell it, it'll keep the bugs away :)
