| Ahhhhhh, my first post since returning...I knew I'd find a thread that would catch my eye.:) I used a prong collar on Roxanne. At first I too thought it would be cruel and unusual punishment. However it has worked wonders for us. A while back i had a problem with her being an overly enthusiastic people greeter in public. It was to the point that i was being pulled over to where she wanted to go when she wanted to get there. I had never had this kind of problem with her before. She was my most dependable well trained baby. And had never pulled on the leash or attempted anything like this since she was a couple months old. Her flat collar just wasn't cuttin it. I started using her prong collar along with her favorite distraction (tennis ball of course;) ) And with time and work we are back to normal. Or rather as normal as life gets with a rott. :D I think a prong collar used CORRECTLY with a good training program could be an effective yet still humane training aid. Just MHO. By the way thanks to all who advised on this problem...it worked

| Got Cromwell when he was 8 months old - a rescue. Initially I used a choke - he would tighten his neck mucles and pull me. He dragged me across a street and over railroad tracks. (I Still have the jeans with holes in the knees). Upon advice of my trainer - I got the pinch collar and used it during training sessions. Cromwell now weighs between 128 and 133lbs of muscle - and I am 5' 3" and weigh between 110 and 115, I was hurt in a car accident which had made my right hand and arm weak - no way I could control him with strength alone. When the pinch collar comes out, he associates it with training and treats and good behavior. All it takes it is a gentle tug of the collar and he is back on track. I also have one for the GSD and beagle. If I use the choke on the beagle she will pull and choke herself nearly unconscious. With the pinch collar I she behaves. My vote is for the pinch. I did try the harness - Cromwell broke it; the halti he will not tolerate. It stresse him out too much. |
