WorkinDogz Thanks for putting this back up. I have been thinking about getting a prong collar and with this info. I won't be doing it wrong. You have saved me from misstakes in the past also. I just want to let you know you are GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! ------------------ NIKA'S MOM

Since there have been choke chain/prong collar discussions again....I thought I'd throw this back up for "how should a prong fit" questions that some may have.

WorkinDogz: Alan says to only attach the leash to the swivle or "D" ring, NOT both rings. I told him about the discussion here on the forum, but insists that connecting only the "D" ring is the proper way. I am not trying to start a war...was just wondering why two great trainers would disagree about this.

Grrrr, my husband says one ring also. OK you do what you want but you KNOW who's always walking the dogs Now if I could just get it to stay put on the dobies skinny little neck (matches his skinny little head) ![]() How come his neck is so skinny and the rest of him is so fat???? Hey we're getting good at this walking thing! An hour a day, lately. ------------------

I've been trying it both ways. I notice when I use both rings, it tends to pull his whole neck back, and I tend to give a stronger correction than I intend. I've gone back to just the swivel ring for general walks on the road. I might attach to both for walking where there are major distractions.

I've got to admit, I've always used the 'D' ring. But you're never too old to learn. I'll be trying both rings tonight at training. Thanks for the info Workin'.

k&s The whole idea behind it is a SELF correction from the dog when he pulls; not from you. The dog teaches himself leash respect with the aid of a training tool. I pull...I get pinched. I walk like a normal dog...nothing. You see his "whole neck go back" because the prong is actually doing it's job...PINCHING when he pulls. You don't see it with one ring because the prong isn't actually doing its job..

Working- OK, this morning I noticed when it was just on the swivel ring it tightened sometimes gradually as the leash dangled, and I realized that this is not what I want (a gradual 'warning' not to pull). So I put it back on both rings. Now it just lays there til he pulls forward. Seems to be working. I'm giving up on the choke collar all together and am going to use pinch to train and buckle collar when he is trained.

k&s Whatever collar you hope to "graduate to" should be worn in addition to the prong (look at previous posts for explaination why) and the leash should be hooked up to the ring on THAT as well as both on the prong. Remember..dogs aren't dumb. They can be perfect ladies and gentleman with one collar; and complete idiots on another if you're not careful. Prong=training TOOL; not crutch

Okay, my turn. I'm going Monday to get Dweezle's prong collar. I noticed that the store also sold rubber covers for the prongs, what's up with that, does it deminish the effectiveness of the collar?Lorie

I've never used the rubber tips. It stands to reason that it would deminish the effectiveness. Fergy....yep, it works

Well it looks like im the 1 being called “the petsmart trainer” Although a perfur Alan or SchH3k9 lmao. I agree with WorkingDogz to a point, in that the most effective way though not the proper way to use a prong is to “double ring”. In fact this is how I correct my SchH3 5year old Rott; But I have found that not all dogs need this harsh of a correction, not all handler trainers know how to give a proper correction and not all excursuses being trained require this type of a correction, not every1 is training for Schutzhund III nationals, some just want the darn dog to stay off the couch, or not to pull so when walking down the street. For this I teach those without experience who ask me to use only the D-ring. The chain dose work as a shock absorber for the inexperienced and or heavy handed. When I do teach the double ring setup I have the handled trainer get a feel by putting on the leg both ways so they can feel what they are doing to there dog.
