| pinch collar position Where should the pinch collar be positioned on dog's neck for the best correction? Should it be up high? When I walk my dog I notice that his collar is way down on his neck, and I am wondering if it may be too big for him. Thanks

| 05/17/2001 9:36 AM CDT The prong collar should be placed High up on the neck just behind the ears. It should be snug; you should be able to slide a finger under it using some exertion. You can take a link or two out to get the fit you need. :)

...and if your dog's neg gets thicker, you can buy more links and add them on to the present collar without having to buy a new one. :D

| Place the O-ring where you snap on your lead behind the left ear, if it slides down then it's too loose. If heeling on left. Are you in any classes, or know a trainer that can help you properly fit, and put on a prong collar? You said a pinch collar in your post, but people responded as if you are talking about a self-correcting prong collar. (maybe I'm having a moment of confusion ;)) So, if you are talking about a choke collar, it's okay for it to slide down some. I allow about 2 1/2 inches for correction, which will will not fit snug. Make sure you put it on right, so after the correction the collar releases. Make the letter P with the chain facing your dog, then put it over his head. Also check to make sure it releases. I never leave either of these types of collars on my dogs. But I do leave a Buckle collar on. Which is removed before either collar is applied. |

| I apologize for my ignorance, but I thought that prong and pinch collars are the same thing :o In fact we are using the prong collar as indicated on this picture. http://www.petsmart.com/dog/shopping/collars__leashes___id_tags/chain/products /product_384.shtml Moderators, please don't delete this link, I just think that the is the best way to explain to other member what my question really is :o We are gonna see our trainer but not until 10 days from now and I am gonna ask her that again. She was the one that suggested buying this, but I am not sure wheather she adjusted the size of it when my wife bought it. Thanks again for all your responses. PS. What does a pinch collar look like?? :o [ May 17, 2001: Message edited by: Homerhomer ]

| Homerhomer, You are talking about a pronged collar, and I'm not sure if people refer to it as a "pinch" collar or not. I know most call it a "self-correcting" or "prong" collar. The other collar I was speaking of is sometimes called a slip chain, choke chain or choke collar. I don't know if anyone refers to it as a "pinch" collar? How old is your dog Homerhomer? I don't use a choke chain untilthe pup has his adult teeth. All training before this stage ususally about 5-6months (sometimes longer) is done with a wide flat buckle collar. This allows for gentler corrections, and not so harsh. Of course ANY collar can be misused, so please, know how to make corrections with the type of collar you are using before you start your session. I would hold off using the prong collar until your trainer can help you fit it properly on your dog. It's only 10 days, or swing by and ask for a few minutes to have her/him assist you. :) |

| Thanks all of you. Homer is 14 months old and we thought (and the trainer concured) that sometimes he needs a stronger correction (must be the terrible teens I guess). I took one link out of the prong, and the collar seems to sit higher on his neck now. Thanks agian. |
