| Obedience Training Took my 2.5 year old guy to training last week. He is not aggressive with other dogs just very anxious and curious therefore pulls quite a bit.. Besides some ignorant owners there my guy was very curious about one terrier mix (which his owner walked right at my guy versus diffusing the situation and walking the other way)who barked non stop. The trainer suggested I do privates to de-sensitize him first and counter condition since the socialization period is way past. She fears that by my guy not being attentive and me getting possibly frustrated we are setting him up to fail. Privates first to set the ground rules then we can try classes.. Anyone agree with this or have I not provided enough information? |

| What about staying in the group and supplementing with private? When you find someone coming straight on and your dog is not equipped to deal with it, simply turn and walk away. You don't have to remain static. You dog will be looking over his shoulder, but so what? A left turn is usually best as it allows you to use your body to turn your dog instead of dragging on the lead. Step forward with your right leg crossing in front of your dog's head and just keep going.

| Yes, I agree with your trainer. Privates first and then re-join the class when the dog has some basic obedience skills. It is very difficult for the dog to learn new ways in such a highly distracting atmosphere, especially at his age. |
