What do you give for treats!

I'm currently giving Justice Bil-Jax liver treats and Pro plan biscuits (which I break into 1/4ths). Neither are REALLY exiciting to him. I'm looking for something that will drive him crazy http://www.rottweiler.net/rottie/smile.gif but I am trying to stay away from table foods.

Various veggies & fruit, & the biggest treat of all--beef marrow bones.

Since this is in the training section, I am thinking you mean training treats. If this is correct, then I will tell you what Daisy's trainer taught me.
Take a hot dog (turkey or chicken) and slice it lengthway into fourths.
Then cut those wedges into little pie wedges no more than 1/4 inch thick.
Now that you have all these little pieces, arrange them on a plate, with a paper towel under them, so that they do not touch.
Put a paper towel over them and stick them in the microwave for anywhere from 2 1/2 min. to 4 min. depending on the micro.
Then you will have these shriveled little bits of hot dog that will keep well for a few weeks.
I put mine in one of those half cans that pringles come in and mix in cheerios. The can is easy to take along with me and it keeps them fresh and the smell of the treats out of my backpack. The cheerios will absorb the taste and smell of the treats, so one batch will last longer. The can is also good because just a little shake it and mine know to pay attention because something good is about to come out of it.
Every dog I have encountered when I have these handy will fall all over him/herself to do what I want so they can have one! And because they are so small, you don't have to wait forever for them to finish it before you continue with another command.
Hope this helps!

P.S. Just saw that comment about not wanting to give table foods. I don't have a "commercial" treat suggestion since these treats that I make are very effective for me, and they are WAY cheaper!

Sampson's favorite has always been snausages. He would pick those over a big steak. We went through a lot of them during his obiedence training.

Hot dogs work Great!!!! Plus you can cut them up into very small pieces and one hot dog will give you lots of training. I know you are trying to stay away from table foods, but thats what will drive them crazy.

I use small pieces of biltong ( dry beef, ostrich, kudu etc ...)
Get their attention everytime, and the pieces are realy tiny, so not fattening up.

I use hot dogs too. Zip lock baggie in the pocket, they know it's there. Works like a charm.

Although Savannah trains for hugs, kisses and pets, she ABSOLUTLY loves:

dried apples
wheat thins (how wierd is that)
banannas (both real and chips)
dried pineapple
real chicken (I take the trimmings off whole boneless breasts and cook em up for her)
scrambeled eggs

Hmm,

I'll admit it -- I'm a bit of a table-food snatcher for the dogs (though I usually snatch things like bread or sugar-free biscuits), but what I eventually settled on were small anchovies, smoked until they were biscuit-hard (even the bones became brittle and crunchy)and tried to always have a pocketful of those.
I also baked liver treats by making a firm dough and adding blended liver, spreading out the mixture thin in a slow oven and baking until bone-dry. It was easy to break into tiny pieces and went over very well.
And since they loved Canovel chewable tablets, I sometimes held impromptu training sessions around vitamin-giving time. http://www.rottweiler.net/rottie/smile.gif

Stonyfield Farm Yogurt
Old Mother Hubbard Biscuits
Caneloupe
Banannas
Utz Hard Beer Pretzel (Elroy's favorite)
Ice Cubes
Nutro Puppy Drumsticks (My dogs are not puppies anymore, but I give these while "working" my dogs. They are only 13 calories per drumstick, small and effective)
Merrick Extra Large Sow Ears (safer than rawhide yuck)

I go to the supermarket, and get them to give me a 1/4 inch slice of low salt/fat bologna or regualr balogna...whatever.

then cut that into cubes for training bits. she loves it!

If you have a fussy dog, try some liver brownies. Most dogs will sell out for them in a New York minute.
1 1/4 Pound raw, pureed liver
2 eggs
1 C flour
1 C cornmeal
garlic

Mix all together, bake in a 9x13 pan at about 375 for 30 minutes or so. You can cut them up and throw them in the freezer. A square will go a long ways by breaking off small pieces or you can offer a jackpot reward with a whole one.

Today at training class, even the trainer's Rotti ( and several other dogs) went nuts for Liverwurst, which one of the owners had tossed on the ground.

Great advice on the treat suggestions. The hot dogs are a great idea. Ceasars favorite treat over anything else was carrots, yes carrots he chose them over anything else. You can buy the baby carrots or break the big ones up. He always had a snack of carrots twice a day. If I wanted him to do ANYTHING, all I had to do was open the frig. and the crisper, he'd come running. It was great hearing other suggestions and it certainly will benefit us when we get our baby in a couple months. Thanks so much.
