How to train your dog to come back!! My Dog Blade is a very smart dog, but his owner is not. I can get Blade to come to me in my yard and in the house. But in the field or big openings I can not get him to come back with out running after him. I started training with a big rope about 30 Feet long. When I want him I just call and blow a whistle for him and pull the rope. I hope some one can help me to get these problem solved, I’m tired of running. Thanks Blade And BlackRaven78 P.s. Need help for Owner!!!

Mistake #1. Chasing the dog http://www.rottweiler.net/rottie/smile.gif If anything; run the opposite way of the dog. I would suggest using a "reward system" (food) every time you call the dog to you. In the house; out of the house....every time for about a month. Condition the dog that coming to you means good things. Food. NEVER a correction. NEVER. I sure wouldn't allow the dog to be in an "open" area off lead for a long time. Dogs need to be proficient on lead before you can even consider trying it off lead. It takes time, conditioning and training. I'd start all over. Forget the whistle (a negative response has already formed into habit with it) change commands from whatever you were using to another "come" command. Give the dog a clean slate to work from and build a good recall foundation with food. ANYTIME you call the dog to you...have that food reward ready and waiting. Good luck and happy recall http://www.rottweiler.net/rottie/biggrin.gif

I agree with WorkinDogz. DO NOT RUN AFTER. I did that when Saydee did not want to go out. It only made it worse. She saw it as a game.I stopped and began to stand at the door and call her. She soon learned I wasn't going to play the game. When she came to me I made it a big deal telling her how wonderful she was. She now follows me to the door and goes out.No more draging. I do the same when she is out. We have 84 acres so getting her to come was inportant. We started with her on the porch. Then in the front yard. Always with the come and her name. She now comes from any place. I just walk out onto the front porch and call her name. I only need to call twice before I see her runnning from some area on the property. She runs to me and sets and I tell her she is the best baby dog I know.

Another good trick is to crouch down when you call, and make your voice real chipper and happy, like you're going to play a great game. Then lots of petting & praise when the do come. When you call them from down on their level, most dogs seem to feel real good about coming to you. (For another thing, probably no one has ever called them from that low position and then punished them for some wrong-doing.)

I'm from Europe, sorry for bad English. I agree with suggestions, but my 4 months old female feels when I got something to praise(food). I praise her often. So, when I call her, she sometimes comes to me, but always jump back when she eating it. I never correct her after calling. She don't like to pet her when we are outside the kennel. Inside, she is wonderful, but in backyard she is little "crazy" . So hyper, I think.

I agree - don't run after them. The thing that works best for Mac is to either tell him to run and go the other way (always works so far) and also make a noise, rattle keys, chain, etc. to get his attention and then he will respond to Come.
