To housetrain a dog you most certainly don't "shove" the dog's nose into its feces or urine; to teach a dog not to engage in coprophagia you also don't engage in this behavior.

You could have also suggested to your friend that he or she pick up the dog's feces promptly--removing stools from the dog's environment *as quickly as possible* often solves stool eating.

It also would be helpful if you had suggested that your friend have his or vet check the dog for parasites. Another useful suggestion would have been to suggest your friend consider adding something to the dog's food to improve digestion or render the stools unappetizing--meat tnederizers, B-complex vitamins, and sulfur are ingredients that spring to mind.

My puppy did this all the time when we first brought her home:( and until I read on this forum that it actually had a name I thought she was missing something in her diet, but never would I have imagined rubbing her nose in it, Angelbunny I agree with you picking up the droppings straight away seems to have worked very nicely she seems to have dropped that habit now I am pleased to say:)

germanrottz,

Consider this for the future. Rubbing the dogs nose in his feces only serves to continue the coprophagia (feces eating) and may even INCREASE IT.

Why? Well; dogs can't excuse themselves to the bathroom to wash their noses off after it has been covered with feces.....they LICK IT OFF. Doing exactly what you're hoping to end with the process in the first place.

Most times; coprophagia is more habit that anything. (although it's a GREAT WAY TO infect themselves with parasites)

There is an over the counter powder (sold at most pet supply stores) called "Forbid". It's sprinkled over the food of the "poop eater" and makes the dogs' stool distasteful. It won't keep the dog from eating another dog stool...but that's why we walk them on leashes ;)

Old Roy isn't the best choice in food for sure; but a dog dedicated to eating anything they find on the ground would eat their stool even if they were fed the best diet.

There are many foods infinitely better than Ole' Roy; if your friend doesn't know what they are, your friend would be well advised to spend time reading thru postings in the Nutrition and Grooming Forum, and then reading thru the archives.

If the level of your dog training expertise is respresented by the advice you gave to your friend on how to address a dog's stool eating, please get some books on dog training; also spend time reading thru all the postings in the Training Forum, including the archives.

When delila was a puppy, she did this too.

At that time we had been feeding her Science Diet dog treats (ick). As soon as we stopped the treats - she stopped her poop eating habit too.

I would tell him to work on her diet, see how that works :)

There really is no way to stop a dog from doing this... other then running behind your dog with the pooper scooper.

Dogs usually treat themself to waste for no other reason then boredom, hey its something to do!!! There are products that you can buy that you are suppose to sprinkle on your dogs food to make their waste taste bad LOL as if it doesnt already taste bad.

I have tried all the things that you can buy and non of them worked I even went so far as to boobie trap the waste with hot sauce and spraying it with bitter apple. Wouldnt you know they would simply push the waste around flipping it over to get to the under side where the spray and hot sauce didnt touch it

So needless to say now whenever my dogs go out I go out too which isnt a bad thing I no longer have to tell people to watch their step due to meadow muffins all over the yard:D

An electronic stimulation collar can be very effective for controlling this problem. However, keeping the yard picked-up is important too.

Well there’s one other reason; they like to.

I tried all the products designed to curb coprophagy, none of them worked. The e-collar did the trick. ;)

The food you’re feeding the dog may play a part in this too. When I switched over to Wellness the stool eating resurfaced with the dog that had the habit and another dog that never ate stools, started doing it. :(

I switched over to Canidae and the coprophagy ceased. :)

Before you know it, your dog won't be eating poop, he'll be up on the poopdeck, sucking on a corn cob pipe and singing "I'm Popeye the Sailor Man". ;) Should we add a little Olive Oyl? LOL

Spinach???

OK Roscoe - care to elaborate on that one? I've never heard of using spinach. I thought that you had to be careful when feeding spinach because of the Oxalic (spelling?) Acid. Too much is not good. Anyone know anything about this?

I also have a dog who constantly eats poop. Then she wonders why I won't let her kiss me

Did we ever find out why spinich is supposed to stop poop eating?

I am on a mission to get Brutus to stop. Hubby and i have already had the pick up the yard talk, so now I am looking for other ways to stop it (if there are any)
