hmmmmmmm I was out walking my 2 1/2 yr old rescue (sheltie lab thingy, yeah i know this is a rotty forum) and ive been working with him using a prong collar, which is absolutely great! it works amazingly. But anyways, so I'm walking him on leash in this field behind my house, and there is for some reason, a congregation of people all with dogs, mostly off leash. so i have my dog sit and wait for them because all the off leash dogs are now headed towards us at a rapid speed. one of these dogs was what looked like a cocker spaniel. anyway they're doing the dog thing (sniffing away) when all of a sudden they both start barking and rushing at eachother. of course, i immediately pull my dog away as this seemed logical, and he calmed down, (this happened once before, but we re-introduced the dogs and they were fine after that), but every time they came near eachother the barking would start all over again. after this everyone was avoiding my dog like he was some evil demon. which he isnt, all though i can see how they would think that. im kindof realizing now how few people have truly obedient dogs, (the guy with the cocker was still chasing his dog and trying to catch it half an hour later, and another guy had to get his dog by distracting it: "hey _____ look over here, whats this its a ball come over here") anyway, sorry to drone on, but i was wondering, why is he like this around certain dogs. (im wondering if its like a territorial type thing, and he does it with other guy dogs only (im not sure they were). anyways thats it thanks in advance for any help, Samantha

My rottie (neutered male) is fine with other dogs...EXCEPT whole (intact) males. Goes crazy whenever one gets near him. Don't know why intact males set him off (dominance thing?) so I just make sure that I am aware of every dog that he is in contact with. (People see me staring at their dogs and probably think I am admiring them..which I am ...but I am mainly looking to see what, if anything, is between their legs! http://www.rottweiler.net/rottie/biggrin.gif LOL!)

Volunteer, Boris is not male dog aggressive so far, but I do the same thing you do when I am with him in public. Two interesting things happened the other night in Petsmart, first a girl with a young neutered Cane Corso, approached and I asked if he was friendly, she said yes, so I let Boris approach. The Cane's tail was in that fast upright position and the hair was beginning to go up on his back. She said his tail is wagging, I said I don't think that is the right wag for play and I moved out of the situation, Next thing I know a boxer went bonkers growling and lungeing at Boris, the owner could barely hold him. I put Boris in a sit, stay position and he held his cool. I was very proud of Boris. I always ask if the dog is a male or female and if it is neutered This Cane was neutered, but I think the owner might be clueless as to dog body language. Didn't get a chance to find out if the boxer was neutered or not. I think dog aggression, can sometimes happen in the blink of an eye. I think your approach is a good one.

Funny you should mention about 'most' dogs are not obedient. I bumped into my neighbor who was walking one of her Labs. As soon as he dog spotted my two, he was pulling and dragging his owner. I told my dogs to sit and stay, which of course they did, and we wait for them to pass us by. My neighbor wanted the dogs to meet but I told her my 7 months old female is showing aggression toward other dogs and didn't think it was a good idea. I then walked away. Are you kidding? I am not letting her dog near mine. She can't even control him.
