5 Month Old Rescued Rott

Hello All:
I know there are some posts on biting and nipping but I wanted to see some new reactions or what most of you think. My husband and I recently adopted a rescue Rott at 12 weeks old. I am told that he was in 3 shelters, 2 homes and boarded at a vets before coming to my home on March 31st. He is now 5 months old and 65lbs. He has been thru puppy kindergarten and currently is enrolled in a 6 wk Positive Motivation Course using clicker training - and doing very well I might add! Here are my concerns-when we first got him he was quite passive and I truly think this was due to him not realizing he was truly home! Now he has become quite mouth and will simply bite your hand or leg often. We have tried ignoring him, redirecting his attention, holding his snout shut with a stern NO, turning our backs to him etc... Nothing seems to work! Once he does this I sternly say NO and put one of his toys in his mouth and praise him! Though he continues - some days I look at him and ask him 'what do you not get?' Thank goodness he has lost the puppy teeth - those babies hurt! Anyway does anyone else have any other ideas? I have been told to try the bitter apple thing or to shake a can of rocks (I have not tried these though) - does anyone have anything else I can try? I really want to stop this now! Is he bored? My husband is home with him all day due to being out on disability and when I get home I walk him each nite! We certainly exercise him! At times these mouth bites are more directed to me - is it because I leave and go to work and he is home with my husband each day? Do you think this could be emotional baggage from his former homes and owners? Any help is appreciated!
