Thumbs down Bitch won't pee!

I have a problem with one of my show bitches. When I take her to a show she will not pee from when we leave home until we return home again, which could be 12 hours or more. I have tried taking her into wide open fields away from show ground and traffic and letting her of her lead. She will walk and sniff about but refuses to pee. I have had to cancel entries into many far away shows because of this. This is my first show bitch so I have never encountered this problem before. Has anybody got any suggestions for me. I am afraid of her developing cystitis or urinary problems later on. Your help would be appreciated.

Have you tried bringing some of her urine in a bottle and scattering it where she needs to go?

Just a thought...

Re: Bitch won't pee!

Maybe she has issues with peeing on a leash. When Nisha was a puppy our trainer told us to take her out on a leash to prevent this "leash anxiety" problem.

Re: Bitch won't pee!

Could be environmental issues she's having. First, rule out any physical problems, next get her out and about more (not just to shows) around town; parks, parking lots, rest stops, etc....

I have never had a problem with a dog not wanting to urinate while travelling, but I have had hesitant poopers.

Hope this helps.

Teaching her to pee/poop on command (starting at home where she's comfortable and then taking it on the road) would likely help, as well.

Re: Bitch won't pee!

No dog can hold their urine forever. I bet if you went to a further away show she would pee eventually. I like the idea of bringing some of her own urine in a bottle to scatter around. This would make her feel more comfortable as if she has gone in the are before. And make sure you are there to catch it so you can get super excited!

Re: Bitch won't pee!

Our puppy used to hold it - Pee and Poop - while we were out, but using a command word has really helped. Our first trip away from home, I had to stand outside with him for almost 30 minutes saying, "finish," over and over again. Now he's a lot better and will actually go in under 5 - 10 minutes. I would say try taking her out on a leash at home and introducing a command word. They also sell potty training sprays that are supposed to make puppies go in specific spots, so maybe something like that would help.

Good luck and let us know what works.

Re: Bitch won't pee!

My one show bitch used to not pee for hours on end when I got her as a 4 month old puppy she did not got pee or poop for at least 12 hours, at her new home (my yard). Then I used to take her to work with me and she would not go all day. Eventually she learned she could go anywhere especially after she was on the road with a handler for awhile. Those girls can be picky on where they go. My other girl will pee anywhere especially if another dog has gone there before.

Re: Bitch won't pee!

When we took Emmy camping for the first time, she did not pee or poop for 2 DAYS!! I was beside myself but considering that we were not anywhere near vet help, we just stuck it out and on day 3 she finally peed. It did take her until late that night before she pooped but she finally did. To this day (she is going to be 6) she will NOT pee or poop on our walks or when we are visiting but she will finally pee at the obed shows we go to! Hang in there!

You would think that but the breeder took her mother to Germany to get mated last month all the way from Ireland and she peed once in 3 days! So I guess she has the same problem. It wasn't for the want of trying........trying her from 15-20 minutes at a time at different intervals from he left til he got back. As you can imagine it left it a very long journey.

Re: Bitch won't pee!

I am laughing my a#@ off right now. I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE! My show bitch Serena is famous for holding it. When she was 8 months old she went 48 hours without peeing or pooping. I was scared to death. When she finally came to her senses and decided to go she nearly exploded. (at least one member of this forum was a there to witness it). As she has matured she has gotten a little better and will at least pee after 20-30 minutes of walking. She may only poop once or twice over the course of a three day show weekend.

Now we have a new show pup. With him, we only take him out on a leash to potty. No exceptions. I wanted him to learn to pee on a leash. It has worked beautifully. If your girls is still a pup, I recommend going this route. Take her out on leash only and praise her when she goes. It mat take up to a month or two to teach her, but she will get there.

Many times this is environmental stress that causes this, because the dog feels more comfortable on it's own 'turf'.

Like moondog, we teach our youngsters to go on command on leash in the yard, and then we go elsewhere so the dog feels comfortable evacuating anywhere we ask it to.
