Talking yard training

I have a question. My husband trained the dog to go outside in the front yard because it was easier at 4 in the morning instead of waking up the whole house, I want her to go in the back, that's where I take her. she wont unless you go with her. Sometimes I am in the middle of painting or drywalling and there is no one else home to take her out I know she doesnt go out back cause the second I let her in she pees on the floor. she is almost 6 mths, when do they go outside by themselves my other dog used to go all by herself all I said was go pee and she did and I let her back in and she never had an accident. new flooring cant afford dog pee? help,

That's your other dog. Like people, each dog is different. Take a minute from what you're doing and take her out there yourself. Treat each time she goes. Do this until she's comfortable. Then maybe try having her go by herself.

Re: yard training

Gary does the same thing! We have always taken him out front to do his business. When we put him out back, he absolutely does not go on his own. If Gary is out back by himself, I usually am in the kitchen so I can keep an eye on him from the window (yeah, my pup at 7 months still tries to eat things that he shouldn't) but he never goes potty.

I think they don't do it because they are young and still exploring the exciting back yard, so they forget about pottying and get caught up with using their little noses. They go out front so easily because from day 1 they have been going out there so every square inch of the front yard has already been investigated

I guess I don't see this as a bad thing. I believe that if a dog is outside the owner should be out there regardless. We never, ever let our dogs outside unless we are phyiscally present. To me this is one of several responsibilities of owning a dog. JMO

Wink Re: yard training

I see our time outside as part of our bonding, with my 13-week old pup. It reminds me that life is precious and short and that I want to spend it with the ones I love. For my dog, time outside for peeing is an important part of her day and I need to share it with her, and PLAY, PLAY, PLAY for at least a few minutes.

I used to be "too busy" for that sort of thing, but have learned my lesson.

Re: yard training

I had a shihtzu that was 8 and still wasnt housetrained no matter what I did, she would go to the door during the day, but at night she would pee right outside my daughters bedroom door, at our old house I watched her once she literly slowly walked like tip toed downstairs to pee and then quietly came back upstairs and looked in the front room to see if anyone was watching and went back to sleep

But anyways I always go with my dogs, no matter if we go out front or out back, they now always go potty and poop out through the basement its easier and less mess scattered throughout the yard, Cash goes towards the back and gypsy goes in the front

If you cant watch her when you bring her in and she doesnt go put her in a crate... or stay outside for a few xtra minutes playing and I think eventually she willl go

Re: yard training

I'm sorry, but you'll have to stop what your doing to care for your dog.

Seems to me someone wasnt' thinking clearly when they said "let's get a dog". They are your responsibility, she/he's not ready for the backyard on his own. I think someone should be with him no matter what anyway.

Take a break and do what's right for your dog - and please don't complain about it. I'll do it gladly until my dieing day I love them that much.

Re: yard training

For a while, at least, you are going to have to go outside with her and do the housebreaking sequence in the back yard... happy dance and praise when she does her business and all. She will figure it out once she has spent enough time out there that the back yard is as familiar to her as the front.

I can't say you will always have to be with her when she is outside, as I don't do that myself. (I would think differently with a youngster like yours, though. I would not leave her alone outside).

Re: yard training

I have been clearly thinking for 35 years about my pets, but sometimes I have a life and other things are more important. do you work or do you spend your life outside with your dog. dont assume to know all about me. not all dog owners are the same. I take my dog to work everyday with me and I play with her everyday and night when we get home. I also have a house to run so dont tell me I dont think about my pet. like people they also need time alone that is according to the vet and trainer.

We all understand this. We all have lives. We all have chores. We all have to keep our houses up and running. However, you can't force your dog to be comfortable where she's not. You have to build up to it. If you don't have a few minutes to stop what you're doing to go with her to the back yard so she can do her business, then no, maybe you're not set up for a dog.

Once she's comfortable out there alone, then yes, go for it, let her stay out there a bit by herself. Dogs do need time alone - when they are ready for it. If they are not ready and you force it on her, she may become fearful and I doubt you want that. You have a young pup too, I would never leave a young pup alone outside. Heck, I don't leave my two dogs outside alone ever.

Re: yard training

She's probably still trying to figure out where she can and can't go. If she's always been taken out front to potty and you have discouraged her from going in the house, she probably isn't sure yet that she is supposed to go in the back. Make sure you have a word associated with going, I use outside, and go out back with her for awhile and stay out there until she goes, and when she does, praise like crazy using the word outside. She will get it, in a short amount of time and then yes, you can leave her out for a bit. And I'm in the camp of it's ok to leave your dog outside by hisself/herself for some time. with that being said, I know my surroundings and feel comfortable doing this. You have to determine your surroundings and wether it's safe for your pup to be out there alone and know what she can/can't get into that could cause her harm.

Re: yard training

To get her housebroken to the back yard, you are going to have to go out and spend enough time for her to do her business, praise her to the skies, and come back in.

We are NOT talking about "spending your life outside with your dog". I'm sorry if you don't like the answer you got from several people here, but you asked the question. Training youngsters does take time; this isn't a matter of hours on end, but a few minutes at intervals throughout the day. As she gets more familiar (and bored) with the back yard, and gets the idea of what she is supposed to do, the time outside should get shorter. I don't think there is any way to train her to use the back yard without going out there with her, just as if she was a small puppy and you were just starting out with housebreaking.

Both these statements apply to me. I never leave my dogs outside by themselves. I don't feel like a responsible owner having them outside alone. There is a cat that frequents our yard which I feel our youngest could easily catch. I would hate to walk outside to see that scenario played out because I wasn't outside watching. We have also found dead birds in our yard (probably from said cat) but possibly due to West Nile. If I am not outside actively supervising my dogs I wouldn't know if they found and ingested remanents of a dead diseased bird. Someone else recently posted about their dog being sprayed by a skunk. I'm sure the time to clean up the dog was more significant than going outside with the dog. Of course it is up to you to decide whether or not you are going outside with your dog; I just stated I always do and believe it is part of the responsibility of owning a dog. This is my opinion.
